98 Rock's 'Stash' Pleads Guilty to DUI, Sentenced 6 Months

The former radio personality was arrested in July after a crash on Interstate 95 that injured five people.

Former Baltimore radio DJ "Stash" has pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in an Abingdon accident that injured five people. He was sentenced to six months in the Harford County Detention Center on Monday, Explore Harford reports

Stephen G. Smith, 48, of the 1600 block of Junius Court in Bel Air, was arrested on July 22. The 98 Rock radio personallity was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, negligent driving, and other traffic-related charges.

Around 9 p.m. on July 22, Smith was driving a 2006 Nissan Quest northbound on MD Route 24 at a high speed when he crashed into the back of a 2011 Hyundai that was stopped at a red light, according to state police. The Hyundai was driven by 34-year-old Heather Manto of Bel Air, according to Maryland State Police.

The force of the crash pushed the Hyundai into a 2009 Nissan that also was stopped at the light, police say.

The Nissan Quest continued 300 additional feet before coming to a stop near the guardrail.

Investigating troopers said Smith was demonstrating signs of being under the influence and arrested him, according to state police.

Manto and her four passengers, Todd Fisher, 30, of York, PA; Joshua Stavrakoglou, 28, of Baltimore; Joshua Cowan, 32, of Baltimore; and Harvey Dail, 29, of Abingdon; were taken by ambulance to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air for treatment. They were later released.

Clinton Cottrell Sr., 48, of Bel Air, was driving the 2009 Nissan SUV. Neither he nor his passenger, Katherine Cottrell, 47, of Bel Air, were transported for medical treatment, according to police.

Smith was taken to the Bel Air Barrack for processing then released, Lt. Chuck Moore, commander of the barrack, told Patch.

Explore Harford reported that Smith's original one-year sentence was reduced by District Court Judge Susan Hazlett after Smith participated in a 28-day alcohol treatment program.

When is "Alcoholism Awareness" month?

Alcoholism takes a far greater toll on people's lives than breast cancer by far, but it's not as glamorous. Not to mention the fact that that the government could never part with the revenue they'd lose by being proactive in treating alcoholism.

I love Stash, he has been an ardent supporter of local music, and an all around great guy. However if these are true charges, he needs to face the music. I hope that he gets what ever help he needs so he can return to his best form and reclaim his place on the radio. Best Of Luck Stash...

While I vehemently oppose drunk driving on any level, I hear too many unbalanced stories about those who have killed people while driving drunk and received no jail time at all, so I have a hard time understanding why there is no consistency. I do believe that with Stash's popularity as a public figure, he could bring more awareness to the subject by doing something in the community, however, just because he is a public figure, I don't believe he should escape punishment. However, they need to jail those who kill every time.

How many instances of DUI does he have? If it's more than 3 in less than 3 years, then fine this guy heavily and take away his driver's license for a year, as well as requiring that he has to have regular BAL's about every 3 day for a year.
If he is found driving without a license, put him in prison for at least a year.

Really, most people with DUI's need to be referred to a alcohol treatment center or told what a damned cab is.

Better yet, why doesn't society burn the hydra, keeping the heads from growing back and mandate that all alcohol sold for anything save cooking has to have the alcohol removed from it?
There are methods to do that today.

The judicial system is very broken and I bet his punishment will be a pat on the hand especially in Harford County. I’m sure it will cost him a pretty penny in attorney fees . Check out case #12K11000334 in Harford co circuit court. This drunk was only sentenced to 1 yr in Harford Hilton with work release for his 8th DWI. Was released in Oct 2011 without any probation whatsoever and was arrested for his 9th DWI in Jan 2012 in Stewartstown PA. His hearing will be in November 2012 in York county, pa. He’s since been caught driving several times on a revoked license in MD. He’ll probably again be drinking and driving daily without a driver’s license by the end of November. It’s sad that there has to be a fatality (usually not the drunk driver) before justice is served.

I am guessing that he was referring to the fact that the whole "pink ribbon" movement brings glamour to a horrible disease. Those ribbons are on everything, and there are SO many events, and rightly so! It would be nice if there were more attention brought to alcoholism, it affects at least as many people as breast cancer.

Stash, I have listened to you since day 1 on the radio. Those of us in Bel Air meet you many times even before you were married. Years ago when you stopped in the Firehouse Tavern and go into the parking lot with a bartender people begged you to think about what you were doing and to get help. You have gotten away with more then anyone I know because of who you are. My brother did far less then you did and it took him 15 yrs to get his license. I know the 30 days is rehab didn't do enough for you hopefully the 6 months will. Get your crap together we are your fans and we miss you on the radio.

You are sooooo true! I used to see Stash around a lot at appearances and local bars in the late 90's/ early 2000's... everyone (fellow radio show staff and on air peeps) used to joke to him about not having enough whiskey to keep him happy when out. Many times I saw him red faced drunk at appearances, preakness, and bars... As with ALL who drink a lot and drive; eventually you will get caught, or worse off, you will have a serious accident. Its a tough habit to kick and when one becomes complacent and confident while drunk thats when bad things happen.

Were was his employer? I am sure he did a lot of appearances for 98Rock. Why didn't a supervisor take him aside and ask him to go into a rehab program; and, make it a condition of his employment? He was very lucky no one was killed. I hope and pray he will go to A A meetings and have a mentor to help him in his journey to stay sober.

Stash......shame on you.....you are a disgrace. I think the d&d laws really need to change. First offense....serve 1 year and lose license for 1 year, 2nd offense 2 years, 3 strikes, minimum of 10 years and no license for life.....drive with license suspended or revoked during the suspension period, 20 years.......and consistency is the key....you have to make these people realize there is a hefty consequence for their extremely poor choices.

Oh and handheld cell phone use? Driving with one hand on the wheel?

I'm guessing that's not too much safer then driving drunk either.
You can't properly steer a vehicle (to avoid an accident) with one hand.

Driving while under the influence is as serious as attempted murder.....and quite frankly, it is the same.....how would you feel if you we're the car that was hit....and there could have been way more serious injuries than occurred....this time.....while you are driving a 1/4 ton vehicle, it is a potential weapon if not handled properly

I don't think Mr. Smith should ever drive again. Check out his driving record at http://casesearch.courts.state.md.us/inquiry/processDisclaimer.jis (search for Stephen Gregory Smith).

While he may have an alcohol abuse problem it appears that he has at least as big, if not bigger, problem with following the rules of the road. He has 32 CONVICTIONS in the last 6 years. How many times was he given a verbal warning because he's Stash from 98Rock? He got an awfully light sentence most likely because he hired a really good local lawyer. From the Aegis..."(Judge) Hazlett said said she did appreciate that Smith volunteered for the rehabilitation program and noted that Smith has benefited from "very good legal advice"." He's done as well as OJ did in his murder trial. In 2011 he got a probation before judgement on a DUI. That should NEVER happen on DUI and it's especially heinous when you look at his record as a whole. This wreck could have caused fatalities and he didn't even have insurance. He's a driving scofflaw and should be behind bars for years and never be allowed behind the wheel again. I feel bad for his wife, five kids, and the folks that he injured. Driving is a privilege, not a right, and Stash's privilege should have been revoked years ago. The disdain I feel for him as a driver is completely at odds with how I feel about him as radio personality and I wish him no ill will. Good luck to him, his family, and those hurt in the wreck he caused...

When you are in the public light, it is your responsility to be a role model for those who look up to you as a celebrity. Shame on 98 Rock for not providing employee assistance when he was obviously on the skid down. Shame on everyone surrounding individuals with addictions for enabling the behavior and not recognizing the danger addicts pose to innocent people. These statements speak to the legal system as well. Politicians, shape up the laws and hold people accountable for their destructive decisions. I am by no means perfect but my mantra before choosing to do anything is, what would my children think of my actions and choices and how would I feel if one of them made the same choice. Time for adults to start acting like adults.

alcoholism is not an easy ride for the alcoholic or the famliy of an alcoholic...treatment and incarceration can motivate the person to take a hard look at their choices....however even these consequences sometimes dont work sometimes....it is shame on all of us for not having the same compassion for addiction that we have for persons that do suffer from other more socially acceptable diseases that cause us to reach out and provide support...lets look at alcoholism for what is is an addiction....perhaps six months in rehab and another six in jail would have provided him with the long term treatment that we know works best....

M. Sullivan: It sounds like Annie is one of those religious/puritanical zealots people like us just laugh at.

Annie: I drink between 4-8 beers every week (total). I'm doing jusssst fine, thanks.

Alcohol is fine - in fact it's HEALTHY in moderation. Science has proved this repeatedly.

I quote Ben Franklin "Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards, there it enters the roots of the vines, to be changed into wine, a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy."

I also believe moderate cannabis usage is perfectly safe as well (although I've never partaken in it, and have no real interest in doing so, even if it became legal). You could make the same arguement towards gambling. For every person that turns into a degenerate, there are ten who keep proper perspective and participate properly. Gambling is as old as time itself.

Bottom line is, as an individual you need to know who you are, be honest about where your good sense limits are as they apply to these vices. When you, as a grown adult, make bad judgments, bad things can happen and you're responsible for them.

Tim, I think your assessment is right on. These Madd Mothers would like to bring back Prohibition. While there are some who can't handle the effects of booze or control their consumption, there are those who go through life just fine with it. I may go weeks without a drink, or I may have a few drinks, or I may decide to get loaded. I got a BS in Applied Physics and a Masters in Electrical Engineering while working full time and drinking 5 nights a week. As I have gotten older, I imbibe less, but drink higher quality spirits more for special occasions than as a regular hobby. I have never had a DWI.

Annie: Both of my parents were alcoholics as well. I hear you on this. One of them could (I suppose) be somewhat considered one still. I had an uncle who got himself killed drunk driving.

What it meant to me is that I had to be aware of the genetic inclination for it to happen, and mentally keep it in check. Of course I was your classic fraternity drunk in college, living on campus and all. I drank plenty (and ate) after hockey games all throughout my 20's before I had to stop playing a few years ago for health reasons.

Actually, I think what it really is, is that once I had my son, hangovers were both irresponsible and unfair to the little guy.

Like Sully said, I'm more of a microbrew drinker these days. Two of them and I've got all the buzz I want 95% of the time. About once every 4 months or so an opportunity comes up to get pretty blasted (wedding, small party, etc) and I usually do that. Just enough to remind me it's fun once or twice a year, but that's about it.

In the end, I absolutely understand where you are Annie, just be mindful that not everyone is in the same place as you. People like Stash sadly don't seem to get it, it's a failing on his part - not drinking itself. I sincerely hope that he can get his life together, before it's too late.

I have excellent benefits; my company pays 100% for both my medical and dental. They also pay 100% of the cost for me to go to college and my 100% of book costs. I have a flexible schedule and I make good money. Then there's the free tickets to baseball games and the company 50 yard seats to the Ravens games that we raffle out to the employees. Yeah, I'm sure you're right that it's the booze that keeps everyone here and definitely not the fact that it's an excellent company to work for (with some pretty amazing perks, including having a drink on Friday afternoons.
