Baltimore County Schools Open 2 Hours Late

Light snow and cold temperatures combine to delay opening.

A light snowfall overnight and the coldest temperatures of the winter so far have combined to delay the opening of Baltimore County Schools Thursday.

School officials announced the two-hour delay on the Baltimore County Public Schools website early Thursday morning.

I haven't seen anything listed on the other local news sites, but my road is just wet and traffic is moving OK, so maybe with the sun rising, even though it's not going to be warm, it'll help and people can still get to them?

Glad I moved south. It was 80 and sunny here yesterday and forecast is same for today. Where's all that 'global warming' when you need it?:)

Yeah, see what's really happening is a new ice age is taking place. See the weather this week? DOOM!

Unbelievably pathetic. There was barely any snow on the grass/sidewalks, much less the streets.
If these bus drivers can't drive safely through half an inch of snow, then they should be canned. I'd have gone to school growing up 100 times out of 100 in New York. It took 5-6 inches of snow overnight for them to even consider a 4 hour delay or closure.

...and yes, I have a kid that goes to school on those said buses.

Tim - just wait until we get 1-2 inches of snow tomorrow! You best get your bread, toilet paper, and water today!

PHP: There is a percentage of people out there today that believe our kids should be coddled, raised in a bubble, never exposed to any kind of risk whatsoever, even remote. They can't fail, they always get what they want, and so on.

Many of you know this, but the pussification of America has been going on for a couple decades now. Some of it, like a degree of gun regulation/banning, I agree with it. However, a good percentage of it, things like excesive political correctness, fear of being sued for anything at any time, I disagree with wholeheartedly.

See, as long as people are doing dangerous activities (and by any definition, driving is inherently dangerous - even when you are a good driver), rare accidents will happen. That's why they are called accidents.

The problem is, the one occasion in, let's say every 5 years in the county lets kids go to school with 2-3 inches of snow on the ground, a bus has an accident and skids off the road. No one's 'really' hurt. Yet you can bet your bottom dollar some kid's sycophant parents will irrationally raise holy hell and try suing the county - and our blind justice system will generally agree with them.

Heck, anyone who follows the NFL sees this happening right before our eyes. Former players actually suing the league for injuries they got playing? Seriously?

Again, school bus drivers when I was in grade school had little issue with a tiny bit of snow. I'm also pretty confident they had rear wheel drive buses too. I'm not talking about 4-5 inches of snow overnight - I would completely understand with a school delay or closure if needed for that.

I was out running this morning before 5 AM (with reflective vest and flashers) and I can assure you that the sidewalks in Perry Hall were plenty slippery at that hour. The few times I crossed a road, the road surface was icy as well.

Complain all you want, but when a kid slips and falls on an icy school sidewalk and the district eventually pays a 5 or 6 figure settlement to the family to make a lawsuit go away, you might complain about that as well.

It's funny, but elsewhwre on Patch people are arguing that having armed security in our schools is worth any price so long as it saves the life of at least one child. I guess asking parents and children to come to school 2 hours late is too high of a price to pay to perhaps keep some (or even one?) children safe?

Evets - I saw my old playground a few months ago - there is nothing to climb, jump off, etc. so kids don't get hurt. Do you agree with that? Do we want walking manatees as a society? Is that 'safe' for the children?

"Complain all you want, but when a kid slips and falls on an icy school sidewalk and the district eventually pays a 5 or 6 figure settlement to the family to make a lawsuit go away, you might complain about that as well. "

and this is EXACTLY what is wrong with our society.

Twenty five years ago, we kids were out playing in this outside. Sometimes we fell and got injured. It happens.

I mean, our school year is already too short as it is, and all this wasted time isn't helping as other countries continue to produce more and more productive people despite not having the resources our nation does.

Not to mention, the lack of A/C (a real hot button issue of mine) makes these poor kids suffer through June days in sweltering schools because it seems this county was run assbackwards for a couple decades or so on this issue.

I disagree with a lot of things that are done iin the interests of safety, but most are done to prevent costly and inevitable litigation. The idea that if someone is hurt there must be someone to blame (and therefore, someone pust pay) is part of our culture now. That is not going to change.

when I went to high school in the 70's not only did our buss operate on dirt/ mud roads but did so in the snow and yes, it sometimes got stuck. Remedy? we older male students got off grabbed the bumper and pushed! There was often a case we got to school covered in mud but we got there and to my knowledge not a one of us ever got hurt!

Michael unfortunately, gone are the days when people look to work through problems, it seems. Today its all about suing someone else for money you don't deserve.

It doesn't just apply to the poor/abusers of welfare. As Evets notes above, it exists in all rungs of American society. It's a disease that I can only hope someday gets cured.

Tim et al,
Good Comments from all. Tim is so right to say the County (Gov and BCPS) has been run with no forethought in mind. We live in a society that kicks the proverbial tin can down the street, instead of dealing with the issues.

The BCPS issues and comments that are being written lately on PATCH, shows there is a major disconnect between BCPS and the community. We need to have 'United" themes, Dundalk United, Towson United, to get our voices heard by BCPS.

There is more going on here than just frustration by parents over the BCPS schools opening 2 hours late...
