Cool Kids Campaign Charity Run Outgrows Lutherville Church

Registration is now open for the 1-mile, 5k and 10k runs to raise money for children with cancer.

It took just three years.

The Cool Kids Campaign, a nonprofit that aims to better the lives of children with cancer, is moving its annual Lutherville Running Festival out of Lutherville and into Towson.

For three years the charity hosted its signature fundraiser at Church of the Nativity just off of Ridgely Road, but popularity and safety concerns have driven the campaign to Goucher College.

The move was announced last week, following a merger with another non-profit 5k hosted by the Baltimore Association of Health Underwriters.

"It made sense," campaign spokesman Kristian Seksa said.

The merger will hopefully add additional funding and more runners to the fold, Seksa added.

The Cool Kids Campaign charity run has been scheduled for June 2, at Goucher College in Towson. Seksa said Goucher College's benefits included:

  • Increased parking
  • A less hilly course for 1-mile runners
  • Designated shaded running trails for the 10k
  • A course away from public roads

Seksa said the campaign wants to promote the run as a truly family-inclusive event. Families who sign up together between now and April 5 are eligible for a 15 percent discount. Between April 5 and May 3, families who sign up together with receive a 10 percent discount toward the cost of registration.

The Lutherville Running Festival about $16,000 for the Cool Kids Campaign in 2012, Seksa said. About 500 runners helped improve the quality of life for kids—specifically in Baltimore—aflicted with cancers.

In 2013, the campaign is hoping to do more.
