It is likely that the 59 bicycles collected from Saturday’s Bikes for the World charity event in Lutherville will be sent to Guatemala to help at-risk teens, organizers said.
In total, 59 bikes, spare tires, tubes, wheels and helmets, as well as $238 in cash and check donations were collected, said Lutherville resident Marty Reisinger.
The two-wheelers will most likely be sent to Eco-Bici, an urban youth project in the outer barrios of Guatemala City.
“They will use the bikes to teach at-risk teens basic mechanic skills and teamwork, providing affordable transport to youth and adults in the community,” Reisinger said.
“During every collection I am repeatedly touched by the empathy and emotions that donors express when they drop off their bikes,” he said. “People are very enthused that they can help people around the world and are genuinely aware of how fortunate we are in this country.”
