Five New Speed Cameras Become Operational This Week
Cameras at Southwest Academy, Loch Raven High, Stoneleigh Elementary, Patapsco High, and Owings Mills Elementary, will be activated August 8.
Baltimore County Police Monday said they will activate five new speed cameras on Wednesday.
The cameras will be located at:
- Southwest Academy, on Johnnycake Road.
- Loch Raven High, on Cromwell Bridge Road.
- Stoneleigh Elementary, on Regester Avenue.
- Patapsco High, on Wise Avenue.
- Owings Mills Elementary, on Reisterstown Road.
County police first announced the locations on July 11.
For the first 30 days, the cameras will issue warnings to drivers who exceed the posted speed limit by more than 12 mph.
After that, violations carry a penalty of $40 with no points.
This is the second batch of cameras to be added this summer following the County Council's vote to expand the program.
Four other cameras were activate last month.
The new devices bring the total of operation speed cameras in county school zones to 26. One additional camera is scheduled to be placed on Harford Road near St. Ursula School in Parkville pending approval from the State Highway Administration.

Sorry AG, a "good little Democrat" I am not. When one such as you characterizes people as Democrat or Republican because of single issues they look foolish.
Speed cameras are a poor excuse for raising revenue under the guise of safety.
People intuitively feel cameras will save lives just like they intuitively feel that Voter ID requirements prevent voting fraud. In both instances they are mistaken.

I am pretty sure that all of the Stoneleigh Elementary students are being relocated temporarily to the old Carver High School building inTowson while the Stoneleigh Elementary building is being expanded/renovated. So, then why would they need one on Register Ave in the Stoneleigh Elementary school district when it is no longer a school zone?? Register Ave. is quite a distance from the school building anyway??

Ms. Walther: You're correct. Residents in the neighborhood say the camera has been needed for some time and police say the camera hours of operation will cover times when children are using the school grounds and facilities for other activities. http://towson.patch.com/articles/stoneleigh-speed-camera-regester

I seriously see one bad driver per mile I drive (off interstate). Especially on the weekend, they are all out there. I almost got run off the road yesterday by some baddie on 695 who didn't check their blind spot. I had no choice/exit because of the congestion around me. I woke them up with my horn though.

Chuck, That camera is located in Baltimore City. Also there are still two other schools in that stretch of road. Those cameras, both speed and red light, are cash cows for the City of Baltimore. $$$ If you sit at any of those lights you will see the continuous flash of the cameras. CHA-CHING!

Chuck, I have no frustrations concerning speed cameras. I support the use of speed cameras. Frankly, I don't care if they are near a school or not. I believe they reduce speeds and reduced speeds help to make the streets a bit safer for everyone. My frustration is with those who damage the public property in the name of "liberty" (or for any other reason for that matter).

First, distance from the school doesn't matter. The cameras are placed where they will make the most money. The one for Halstead Academy is all the way up on Hillsway Avenue. That's a block and a half to 2 blocks away. My question is why are all these new locations getting the huge ugly boxes and not the 3 smaller and much nicer looking light post type cameras like those near Dundalk Elementary School. You can hardly notice those things on the side of the road. I'm sure neighborhoods would much rather the less noticeable devices near their houses. The answer I'm sure is money, money, money, because that's all that matters to the government these days. I'll be driving 5 MPH under the posted speed in all these areas-cause $40 in my wallet is much better than $40 in any government fund.

Living off of Ebenezer Road, I actively avoid the road now. They have placed the speed camera right on the downgrade coming in both directions. (They move the camera every week or so to generate more money by making people think it's gone from one location). Keeping the speed limit at 30 when school is not in session is a way to ensure that those who value the brakes on their vehicles speed up naturally on the downgrade in both directions in order to get to the violation speed without even doing anything other than drifting. If you don't get caught by the camera, you can always count on a police vehicle sitting, sitting and then sitting some more on Ebenezer or Joppa for hours at a time. Glad there's no crime going on and the officers don't need to patrol or interact with community members.

Tim, I am an excellent driver. Over 30 years, no tickets, no accidents, no violations. While we are discussing how perfect you are, please don't quit your day job because your work as a satirist here is sorely lacking. Your comment about testing your speedometer every few months tell quite a bit about the type of person (making up false things to make yourself appear better than you are) you truly are. Your additional comment about not speeding therefore not needing the brakes is incredibly inaccurate. Starting out at exactly 30 mph at the top with the camera on the right, school on the left, I have had to hit the brakes as my vehicle exceeds 40 if I try to "drift" by. While we all cannot be as perfect as you with your expertly calibrated speedometer and god-like driving skills, my point is, many vehicles will drift beyond the speed limit without applying the brakes. You need a life! I stopped weeding through your many obsessive comments but I'm sure I could find a lot more!

The speed limit on Cromwell Bridge Road alongside Loch Raven High School is 30MPH. Before the sign was put up, I would guess the average speed to be 45MPH. I drive that road every day to and from work. I feel like I put my life in my hands obeying the speed limit. I am tailgated, honked at, yelled at, given the finger, cut off and given dirty looks every day. I love that camera.

If your government leaders were REALLY interested in road safety, they would attach points to every ticket and give a lot less leeway than 12 MPH over the speed limit. Points with every ticket would ratchet up everyone's car insurance in a hurry, and the entire populace would slow to the actual posted speed limit for fear of higher insurance. Of course at that point the state would start losing money on all the cameras and "work zone" tickets if we all did the speed limit, so they don't want to be too strict! They are definitely playing the probabilities to see how they can best maximize their profit. It's pretty scary to see cars driving through the "work zones" on the highway at rush hour and slamming on their brakes because some picture taker is up ahead making our highways safer.

Several SHA engineering studies have concluded that the cameras are unsafe due to motorists braking unexpectedly. It's also been shown that they rarely remain cost effective because once their location becomes known, they fail to generate sufficient revenue to cover their cost. For instance, my GPS alerts me to their presence and it's updated daily.
The real issue is that despite the fact that you live in one of the most highly taxed states in the union, most of you are more than willing to let "your" representatives lease out the ability to tax to the highest campaign contributor.
Tim
10:53 am on Tuesday, August 7, 2012
Funny thing is, if you aren't grossly speeding (i.e. violating the law), you've got no reason to hit the brakes.
Little bit of cause and effect there. I don't need to brake for cameras.
Paul
11:11 am on Tuesday, August 7, 2012
Sudden braking in the school or residential zones is usually not that big a problem, though I have seen people within legal limits still hit their brakes there just because they see a speed camera sign. At highway speeds, the guy three cars back of the speeder that slams on the brakes had better watch out for the chain reaction! This is much more about revenue and very little to do with the state's concern for your safety - especially on the highway.

10:09 am on Tuesday, August 7, 2012
The issue is not the cameras. The issue is people driving at least 12 miles over the speed limit (usually 25 m.p.h. around schools) If you don't like the idea of cameras for revenue than drive slower. If the cameras don't generate revenue due to lack of speeders than they become a liability and will be removed. Obey the law and all this becomes a non-issue.

FIFA, Again I say if you don't do the crime you don't pay the fine. As for gps devices that report to the police, I would not support that. There are limits to the powers that police should have and that one shows great potential for abuse. It also does not address a specific safety issue whereas fire lane and handicap space cameras would.

I would be interested to know if there is any data on accidents caused by these camera's. As a highway driver those Jeep's on the side of 95 with camera's on them cause everyone to slam their breaks to not get a ticket. I have first had seen 2 rear-ending's for that reason alone. So I would like to see what incidents have occurred on these roads that have made them targets for the camera's. I have a hunch there probably aren't many accidents but people tend to speed there. Which doesn't seem to be beneficial to society....more or so to create revenue

On most days all that would be needed would be to post a couple of police officers at the exit of Seven Oaks ES at dismissal. It is unbelievable the number of cars that pull out onto Seven Courts with small children in the front seat w/o a seat belt, often with mom or dad fumbling with a cell phone. The speed limit sign you are talking about is well before where the hill goes down. There is a rise in the road at the speed limit sign. All I ever do is take my foot off the gas, and the car slows down to 30 before I reach the top of the incline. I think I am the only one who slows down for it. If you are obeying the speed limit of 40 on Cromwell Bridge Road you won't get a ticket anyway, because you are only exceeding the limit at the bottom of the hill by 10.
