'Heroic' Perry Hall Guidance Counselor Praised by Students, Social Media for Stopping Shooter

Students say it was Jesse Wasmer, a guidance counselor at Perry Hall High School, who intervened during a shooting in the school's cafeteria.

Students and social media are reporting that Jesse Wasmer, a Perry Hall High School guidance counselor, intervened after a 15-year-old student reportedly shot another student in the school's cafeteria Monday morning.

"I turned around and the kid's got a gun, and Mr. Wasmer, one of the counselors, pushes him up against a vending machine and then he shot one more off," Ryan Brady, a student who witnessed the shooting, told Patch.

Wasmer declined to comment when contacted by Patch.

A Facebook page has been created to thank Wasmer. At 4:30 p.m. Monday it had nearly 950 fans.

Several Twitter and Facebook users have also identified Wasmer as the person who first made contact with the alleged shooter.

Mike Barnstein wrote on Facebook:

Thank you Mr. Wasmer for taking action and keep the incident from getting any worse.

Michael Reyes wrote on Twitter:

Mr. Jesse Wasmer was the one who tackled the gunman at the Perry Hall High School shooting. Trend out #TeamWasmer He deserves it!

Baltimore County Public Schools officials have declined to comment on Wasmer's possible actions during the incident.

Perry Hall is a great school. This was an unfortunate event and the shooter must be punished and treated mentally if nessessary. I pray for the student and family of the victim. This just hit too close to home, being right in our community. Students should be able to go to school and feel safe. Thank you Mr. Wasmer. It could have been much worse.

For two years I have been trying to get Perry Hall Elementary to begin social skills curriculum as they have a special education population -- and my son is in it.

Anne Arundle County has adopted a multi-disciplinary (every staff member trained) curriculum called "Building Bridges" that tackles these topics exactly and has made a marked difference in the bullying prevalence within the school system.

The Office of Special Education fails to standardize social skills curriculum and Baltimore County is left piecing together interventions that are specific to each child who demonstrates need. Like in Anne Arundle County, we need social skills curriculum standard in our schools to screen and educate all children for social IQ and prevent incidents like this.

What kind of curriculum does PHHS use that promotes positive relationships, tolerance of diverse peers, conflict resolution and interpersonal communication? Where's the prevention efforts? Anti-bullying efforts needs to start at the elementary school level, period, but then carried through high school.

"Trying to get Perry Hall Elementary to begin social skills curriculum" "Anne Arundle County has adopted a multi-disciplinary" "The Office of Special Education fails to standardize social skills curriculum" "piecing together interventions we need"

And not one blame to yourself? As a parent? It's everyone else's fault? Are you an Obama voter?

Daya, your comment is excellent. Please don't let the political post not connected to the subject at hand let you stray from your original message. While we all work hard as parents of special needs students, the community as a whole needs to work together to change the tide when it comes to raising our children, instilling positive messages and manners into their psyche and build them up to be contributing, well balanced members of society. Your ideas are good and you have no need for "blame". We do what we can.

Mr. Wasmer is a modern-day hero for his selfless act of bravery and heroics in the face of an armed criminal intruder bent on destruction and the attempted murder of an innocent and defenseless child with Downs Syndrome by a predatory criminal that lists his heroes as Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold.

To the poster that lists solutions as positive relationships, tolerance of diverse peers, conflict resolution and interpersonal communication and then has the gall to question PHHS' curricula - no one would have seen this coming. There will always be unhinged lone nut individuals that are intent on injuring others based on his final Facebook post.

Mr. Wasmer is like many other teachers who subdued a shooter. Here is "Kaplan Career Institute teacher pulls a gun to stop an attack outside the school"
"Criminal justice instructor Michael Minto was leaving the Kaplan Career Institute in Swatara Township on Monday night when he spotted a man being stabbed, police said.

Minto pulled his gun and ordered the attacker to drop his knife, police said. The attacker fled, and authorities said Minto’s actions likely saved the life of Dillon Mitchell, 30, of Harrisburg.

If Minto had not intervened, “We might be talking about someone who died,” said Deputy Swatara Township Police Chief Jason D. Umberger. “There are not many citizens out there that would have the courage to take that action.” "

In all the discussion about guns and metal detectors and sending the kids to private schools there's another lesson that we may all need to see. Maybe we need to teach our children to be heroes. Not to expect to be protected by the government or the school, but to stand for what is right. That's what Mr. Wasmer did, and he has made every person who ever called Perry Hall home very proud.

Mr. Imperial Crusader -these are some of the very skills lacking in individuals that get to this point of acting out violently. In partnership with parents and the community this a very wise and well researched initiative. It is something that school counselors do on a daily basis. Mr. Chaney-web is right in many respects-while our State and county has seen academic success, social skills warrent more attention and curriculum standardization then they currently get. The counties' education leaders are heading in the right direction on this though. Your collegues are proud of you Mr. Wasmer.

Not enough can be said about Mr. Wasmer and the actions he took yesterday to prevent further tragedy from happening at Perry Hall High School. This is a man who acted in the finest traditions of warrior and who, apparently lives by the warrior's creed. For those who are unfamiliar with that creed, I repeaat it here.

The Warrior's Creed
Wherever I go, everyone is a little safer because I am there.
Wherever I am, anyone in need has a friend.
Whenever I return home, everyone is happy that I am there.

This is exactly why people stand by and do nothing. The United States has evolved into such a litigious society that most people who do not have the attitude of a warrior such as Mr. Wasmer worry about such idiotic things happening. I can hear the liberals crying out now that the accused student was "merely trying to express his feelings and is in need of treatment rather than prosecution as we try to understand what drove him inexorably to this tragic action."

Just remember to cultivate that attitude of the warrior which bears repeating here:

The Warrior's Creed
Wherever I go, everyone is a little safer because I am there.
Wherever I am, anyone in need has a friend.
Whenever I return home, everyone is happy that I am there.

Mr. Wasmer is a good man. These days people throw around the word hero so much that it seems to have lost its meaning, but here is a man that actually deserves the title. This could have been a very different story. A simple thank you could never be enough to express the gratitude to him. Thanks for watching out for my cousins and the rest of the students at the school. <3

Joe, a bully? I think I agree with Joe. He's frustrated because fawning sentiment has taken the place of leadership and common sense. It frustrates me to see women and beta males taking over this country, lemmings who only can use words like "bully, racist, bigot, homophobe and right-wing-extremist-conservatives" etc., in lieu of admitting their failed policies.

We are quick and so right to commend Wasmer, but drop off the logical face of the earth to allow leadership to deal and preempt the actual problem he faced. The left engineers our culture to flatter females to gain power. The result of that comes mere managers who presume to be leaders. We now see the effects of "we have to pass this bill to see what's in it". That might work for liberal Kinder-children, but not those of us who think.

Despite the Horkheimer "counterculture" and billions spent in Dept of Ed since 1980, our kids are stupider, America lags behind the world in education and the jails are overcrowded. But make certain we stop Johnny from wearing a flag on his shirt and keep prayer out of schools!! My gawd what would America come to if we did that?!

They just decided to prosecute the shooter as an adult. The socialist's spasmodic answer to having never loved and disciplined him properly as a child. But they rage & worry about sodas he drank, taught him to make "green" choices, and made certain he was sexually educated with a pocket condom in grade school, assured he'd never wander into an "illegal" Christian student club on school property, but now they bring the cathartic full force of the law down on him while they entitled his parents. Can't anyone see the profoundly stupid way nanny liberals are culturally engineering and running Maryland?

I think it's interesting that everyone wants to talk about everything except the obvious. What does our society do to identify, and treat the mentally ill. Everyone is looking for a rational explaination to what happened. Perhaps there isn't one. Perhaps this happened because the shooter is mentally ill and untreated. There is no special social program that is going to stop extreme situation like this because a person has to have a mental problem to do this in the first place. How does the school identify and deal with students at risk for violence on the basis of thier mental health? Do we have anything at all in the way of protocol for this? Does the school even know who these students might be? Does anyone even care except for the fact that someone got shot?
