Kamenetz: Land Swap Will Benefit Public
The Baltimore County executive tells state officials that a land swap will "result in more public use of the land."
Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz told state officials Wednesday that a land swap with the county school system will benefit the public.
The Baltimore County Council Tuesday approved the swap of 10-acres in Mays Chapel for an adjacent 10-acre parcel owned by the Baltimore County Public Schools system. The school system plans to build a new Mays Chapel elementary school on the site.
Opponent of the swap and the school say the plan will result a loss of the nearby parkland and walking trails.
State Treasurer Nancy Kopp Wednesday asked Kamenetz about the swap, the proposed project and concerns about the lose of open space.
"I just want to tell you the reason why we did this because we're addressing the community concerns," Kamenetz said. "We think by placing the school site on a different location on the parcel will result in more public use of the land."

Who is doing the bullying? This site was set years ago BY THE DEVELOPER as a possible school location and deeded to the county for that purpose. I'm sorry the developer chose to deed that land to the county instead of 20 acres closer to the townhomes and single family homes that produce most of the school kids in that area. You may choose to look at Mays Chapel as a collection of smaller neighborhoods, but to those of us who remember when that area was not zoned to allow for such massive development, it is just one huge community that supplies many students to the school system. As such, Mays Chapel should not be complaining about having a school in its midst to educate those children.

PLEASE CHECK ALL OF THE FACTS ED. AGAIN ALL OF THE FACTS. THE STATE DNR HAS NOT APPROVED THIS SCHOOL SITE YET DESPITE kamenetz's stating TO THE STATE IN HIS ANNAPOLIS APPEARANCE that the communities are for the school. in a 1974 deed for the 10.1 acre parcel (N E corner) which accompanied the record plat there is a restriction about keeping open space. It requires county & several state agencies approval. That's why kamenetz is trying an end around to skirt the issue. kamenetz has let it be well known to the council members that he wants this "LAND SWAP" deal done. Several council members acknowledge the "pressure" from above. Removing 7 acres of 100 year old trees & a more costly venture as the infrastructure is ALREADY in place at several nearby schools is in conflict with a recent council statement about being "green" & preserving conservation as well as SAVING taxpayers more money.
