If Maryland would wake up and relax carry laws this type of crime would not occur so often. But an entire state of Democrats are to touchy feely to do that, so let them baste in the crime that they cause by enabling the criminals. Wake up you are not living in the sleepy little town that Lutherville was in 1970. You can thank the light rail for that. Contrary to any statistics that are diseminated saying that crime has not changed since the inception of light rail that is simply HOG WASH.

I grew up right there, and my parents are still in the area. When I was a kid (30-40 years ago), it was a wonderful neighborhood. With the addition of the light rail, it went straight down hill, as do all neighborhoods that add the inner city trash into their areas via the criminals' express on rails.

agreed. same thing applies to the towson mall. only the big name stores can survive the huge rates of shoplifting there. they don't report half the crime because no one would want to shop there. tragedy.

Let's not get all upset about this until all of the details come out. On the one hand it could be that this was a robbery of an innocent person who was returning from work on the Light Rail Crime Express (this would be a worst case situation). On the other hand it could be a dispute between criminals any variety (drug dealers arguing over a business deal, shoplifters displuting who should get what from the stuff they stole, etc.) in which case if the "injured person" was also a criminal and they die, then this would not be classified as murder. It would be classified as one less criminal.
Too bad that O'Malley's latest "gun control" proposals were not in place because I'm sure that had these newest "gun control" laws would have prevented this entire incident...wouldn't they?

This is also what I heard. Big Lots is on the way. From what I heard they were the impetus behind all of the parking enforcement that was going on in the parking lot to the north of that building.
But don't worry about Big Lots loosing much stuff. Once the toilet floaters from Baltimore City visit the New Golfsmith store and take a gander at the price of some of the small, easily pocketable items that they sell, then the trash that Big Lots sells will be safe...until Golfsmith goes the way of the Borders Book store that used to occupy that space. I give Golfsmith about 6 months before they are gone.

Why Is it always inner city trash? the same crap happens in the county that happens in the "hood." The biggest exception is that the county's crap is wrapped in a much more appealing package. avp seemed to make it a point to mention that it was black men involved. Every crime that's committed whether it be in the state of Maryland or anywhere else are not isolated to the black community. White teens shoplift from towson town center all the time. I was robbed in hunt valley by a white guy with a gun. My suv was broken into by a white guy in timonium while picking my mom up from work. How do I know it was a white guy you might be wondering, a woman who witnessed the crime actually drew a diagram of the parking lot to show where the guy had exited after breaking into my infinity qx56. You people need to wake up and realize that crime is crime and it doesn't care what color you are. I am actually more afraid of white folk than I am of inner city trash as t peter called them. I have never heard of a black cannibal serial killer as with Jeffrey Dahmer. I have yet to hear of a black serial killer that dressed as a clown and killed children. In case you are wondering or if you care to know, I am a 39 year old caucasian female who grew up in the federal hill area of baltimore. Yes, there are many problems in the black community but there are many in the caucasian community as well. The entire world is going to pot, but I suppose everyone is going to blame that on inner city trash.

I see from some of the comments that people are finally pulling their heads out of the sand and seeing the Schaefer Train for what it is, an easy conduit for the criminals, bums, and other effluvia to travel from the Baltimore cesspool into the counties. The change in this area since Light Rail was shoved down our throats by Willy Don has been dramatic. Breakins, assaults, shoplifting, and vandalism have exponentially increased to levels unheard of in these neighborhoods. We have police helicopters searching so often that I wonder if I'm in the city. The people of Linthicum have the right idea; they have been fighting to close their Light Rail station for over a year. What's worse is our taxes are paying for this mess!

Scott, the Baltimore Light Rail drains far too much from the transportation budget for the few people that benefit from it and the problems it causes. The vampires in Annapolis are getting ready to raise the gas tax, supposedly to pay for transportation projects. That money would already be there if we weren't subsidizing the Crime Train. The majority in MD can't afford to subsidize a small minority that actually use this system.

Steve, I'm neither scared nor old. Neither are many people I know with the same opinion. I was even less old when I predicted just the things we are seeing now due to Light Rail. The Ridgely Rd. stop is a perfect summation of the problems Light Rail has brought. Some nice businesses that were there for years are gone partially due to the increase in crime. They put up a police kiosk in a half-baked attempt at security. A relative few (but vocal) people use LRT yet a huge amount of tax dollars subsidize it. This thread is such a poor reflection on our community! Fortunately it doesn't mirror the community as a whole, which is actually quite diverse and good-hearted. The light rail is very crowded with commuters every morning and evening. There are people from a wide variety of ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds living here harmoniously. There are also some thieves, pedophiles, people with untreated mental illnesses, and other folk who sometimes disturb the peace. Let's try to learn from one another, help each other through hard times, and see where that gets us. Will it solve all of our problems? No. But, really, neither will idly spewing vitriolic fear-mongering comments on a website. And unlike the latter, the former may help us to form an even stronger and better community.

I love reading these comments. Both sides have great comments. Light Rail and other transit projects into communities that once had no traffic does in fact increase crime. I remember has a high schooler using the Light Rail to get to my after school job people would come on the train daily selling toiletries, batteries and whatever else they stole from what was once Caldors. I always thought it was funny, and I also patronized them while shaking my head after buying that 16 pack of double A's for my CD walkman, lol. Crime will always be a part of our society. The only thing you can do is live your life. Having a firearm won't save you either if the criminal already has his weapon pointed at you. The John Waynes' are fictional.
It's tragic, it's always tragic. I don't wish death on anyone, criminal or not, it always saddens me. I just pray that my family remains safe in this world we live in, and i pray we all remain safe. Whether you live in Baltimore County like i do or live in the inner-city, i pray we all live happily.

If I, or a member of my family were to be assaulted by one of these toilet floaters from Baltimore City, I can assure you that I will be giving that individual(s) a one-way ticket to meet Jesus. Deserved or not, we don’t need that kind of drama at a MTA stop. I ride the light every day to my job and have never felt threated. I once fought off an attack on a MTA bus back in the mid 90’s but I have not had any serious problems since then. I have had to put up with vulgar language and people urinating next to the tracks. Except for dealing with the occasional broken down bus, late train, or ill-mannered individuals, most of my commute is just fine. I have been using the MTA buses since the late 80’s. I try to use the MTA as little as possible, but that is because its schedule is not always reliable, not because I felt threated with violence. It is amusing reading how some people see the light rail as an evil conduit for crime. As if a bad guy can’t drive a car into your neighborhood. Of the thousands of people who ride the light rail a day the vast majority are people minding their own business, plugged into their own little electronic world trying to get to work or school on time! If I were to believe all the anecdotal stories being quoted as fact, I must be riding the light rail with surrounded by thugs plotting a crime spree. The fact that some fraction of individuals are out to do harm is no reason to scrap the whole system. Fix the system. I feel more threated riding a bike or walking across a street when I see so many drivers blowing through crosswalks with a cell phone at their ear or drunk. Kevin
M. Sullivan
2:25 pm on Monday, January 28, 2013
Kevin, you must have a very high tolerance level to put up with some of the people you describe. The criminals can sure drive cars but, Light Rail provides the anonymity not to be found by using an identifiable vehicle. Plus, the L.R. provides easy and cheap (or free) transport to the most desperate, who don't even have a car. Anyone who has lived in Lutherville, Timonium, Cockeysville since before Light Rail can easily attest to the negative changes it has brought. You may find L.R. useful because you are one of the relative few who works near a L.R. stop. But, this train is costing the state transportation budget a lot of money to subsidize a few people's ride to work and bring crime to once peaceful suburbs. Now they want to raise gas taxes to pay for "transportation projects" while they throw millions away on Light Rail. Anyone who is honest must admit that this make no sense!

Mass transit has been the cause of most of suburbia's issues. No amount of political correctness or putting one's head in the sand will ever divert the glaring truth that the majority of personal and property crimes are committed by blacks from the city. Pikesville and Randallstown used to be nice areas as well back in the 70s and 80s, but now the areas are almost 100 percent black and shootings, theft and violence are the norm. Why is it that when blatant truth is told, it's labeled racism? Facts are facts.

M Sullivan, Yeah I guess I am a tolerant person. Most of my coworkers laugh or cringe when I tell them about some of the trials and tribulations I have endured using the MTA. Bottom line is the money I save by not paying some multi-billion dollar oil company to pollute the sea food I eat can go to my kids’ education instead. The money I choose not give to some Mideast dictator who supports terrorism against the USA can be invested in my retirement plan. The money I save on car maintenance and repairs can be used for a nice vacation. Your point about being able to travel with anonymity on the LR is not correct. Most LR stops and MTA buses now have surveillance cameras. Your assertion that only a few people use the LR is also incorrect. While the usage will ebb and flow during the day, during peak rush hour it can be hard to find a vacate seat. Throw in a Raven or Oriole game and it can become standing room only. Now that the MTA allows bikes onboard trains and the situation can get crowded fast. Take a look at Lutherville or Falls Road park-n-ride and the lots are full. Also I am not sure what facts you are talking about when you say that Maryland Transport Department cannot afford the LR. The 30 mile LR was completed over 14 years ago at a cost of 600 million. Compare that with the 2.5 billion that was just spent on the 14 mile ICC! Now that is TRAGIC!
