An estimated 23,000 runners, joggers and walkers raised approximately $1.5 million for breast cancer research as of Sunday morning at the 20th annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
A Komen Maryland spokeswoman said the beautiful October morning likely drew thousands more in walk-ups, as organizers continue totaling participants and donations.
There were smiles. There were tears. There were sore muscles. And there was pink. Lots and lots of pink.

People give Susan G. Komen money to fight breast cancer and Susan G. Komen gives some of that donated money to the babykillers at Planned Parenthood. I don't think people who give money to Susan G. Komen to fight breast cancer, know their money is going to an abortion organization that kills unborn babies.

True. While I don't like that Planned Parenthood does abortions, that is only an extremely small portion of what they do.
They do breast cancer screenings, mammograms, pap tests, give out prescriptions for birth control/free birth control, etc.
The organization in and of itself is a good one, though they should spin off the abortion services to another organization if they want to get the best amount of money from Americans.
Most Americans are totally against abortion even in cases of rape (it's punishing the child for the sins of the father and sometimes the mother [yes, women can be rapists though it is exceptionally rare]) and realize that with Plan B, abortion shouldn't be necessary anymore.

More LIES OR willfully uninformed comments by Kidwell. PP does NOT offer mammograms, they are all referred out to other providers.

That's a lotta coin for a non-profit to be throwing around for advertising, lobbying, salaries, etc. Tax-exempt no less.
As @M. Sullivan says below it's nothing but big business and anything but a benign little non-profit. This should have been apparent when pink ribbons started showing up on the field at M&T Bank Stadium.

Strictly speaking if one is only referring to women the term Heroine is to be used. But in modern usage the terms Hero and Heroine when referring to women can be interchanged. "Them's" the rules as I understand them, but I'm no grammarian and I will defer to you judgement on the matter. If you prefer, " This is about the Heroines, Heros and Survivors of Breast Cancer." But you get my drift, I hope.

My family participated in the Komen Walk/Run to celebrate our friend Alex, who successfully battled breast cancer and lives to smile while supporting the Komen Race. She is one of the lucky ones whose cancer was detected early by a routine mammogram and successfully treated. After the race, I saw a woman whose best friend died of breast cancer this past Friday. It could happen to any of us, even if you've lived a healthy lifestyle. Please tell your friends and family to get screened! It is only a mild discomfort that takes a few minutes.

According to a Washington Post article from February of this year, while the Foundation funded $76 million in 2010, They spent a total of $58 million on salaries, advertising, office expenses, consulting, contract labor and travel. Travel alone was $3 million. Millions are paid to the top executives of, what has become, a big business. Seems to me they are more direct and efficient means to help breast cancer victims.

I refuse to support Komen employees, founders or CEO's exorbitant salaries and bonuses but would like to give to a legit organization. I already give to the American Cancer Foundation and would like to support another. Any suggestions?

The problem I see with the large charity operations is most begin with an altruistic purpose. But as they grow they rapidly devolve into an organization that needs to feed those employees at the top of the organization.
According to the 990 tax return for for the year ended March 2011 there appear to be 17 senior employees earning between $153,000 and $417,000 per year plus a former president and CEO who was paid $278,000.
Are these outrageous salaries for a large charitable organization? Is this what it takes run the Komen Foundation or any other large group? They would tell you yes and it is probably very comparable to many others, including the American Cancer Society.

They have almost $500 million in the bank at 3/31/2011 of that $264 million is committed to grants with over $100 million unrestricted.
