UPDATE (3:10 p.m.)—The 12-inch water main that burst this morning, flooding a strip of York Road near the Maryland State Fairgrounds, has been a recurring issue for the county and the Department of Public Works. 

“I believe the problems on that one were related to acidic soils out there that have taken a toll on that main," Kurt Kocher, a public works spokesman, said.  “The pipe aged faster than normal.” 

The county has been working on a replacement pipe that will likely be ready by April. 

“We basically have to keep replacing this main," Kocher said. 

The fairgrounds, a McDonalds franchise, a gas station and the Timonium Square shopping center—totaling nine businesses—are all without water. 

Kocher said he was hopeful that crews would have water restored to the affected venues by tonight. 

The break was first reported at 5 a.m. this morning. 

ORIGINAL—A water main break on York Road, across from the Timonium Square shopping center, has forced crews to block off southbound lanes. 

Traffic has been redirected through the median lane, marked off with highway cones. 

Four inches of running water have flooded the right shoulder lane from just beyond the main entrance to the fairgrounds to near Timonium Road. 

Morning commuters, be advised. 

The Department of Public Works has crews at the scene. 

The break appears to be at the site of recent highway reconstruction, leaking through the seams of a visibly patched area of asphalt. 

This is the fourth water main break to occur in the Lutherville-Timonium area in the last four months.

Patch could not confirm at this time how many businesses or homes are without water.
