Where to Find Dry Ice

Here are a list of three area dry ice stores and tips for using the product.

When residents were out of power for several days during Hurricane Irene, many turned to dry ice to help keep their refrigerators cold.

Baltimore Gas and Electric says some residents can expect to be out of power for as long as a week following Friday night's storms. So many in the Baltimore area will need to stock up.

Baltimore Gas and Electric stopped providing dry ice to residents in 2003.

Here's contact info for a few area stores that offer dry ice, according to a list provided by Baltimore County shortly after Hurricane Irene.

  • Capital Carbonic. Sells dry ice only, available to the general public, 410-566-0853, 404 South Caton Ave., Baltimore, MD 21229
  • AAA Ice. Sells wet & dry ice, available to the general public. 410-426-1204, 6100 Belair Rd., Baltimore, MD 21206.
  • Airgas East. Sells dry ice only, available to the general public 410-768-4447, 7504 Connelly Drive, Hanover, MD 21076.

Some hardware stores may also offer dry ice. Be sure to call ahead.

AAA Ice's website offers some tips on how to handle and use dry ice. Always use gloves and keep in mind its shelf life—only 24 to 36 hours. Be sure to keep it away from kids and pets.

the Safeway on Reisterstown Rd. in Owings Mills sells it. We sometimes buy it there for school lab experiments. The one in Parkville used to have it, I'd call ahead to be sure though.

Thanks for the update, Matthew.

I did call one additional place, Ayd Hardware in Anneslie, that I knew had dry ice after Hurricane Irene. The storm hit so fast that they won't have dry ice from their distributor until tomorrow at the earliest. I'm guessing that other places might be having the same problem.

If you see anything out there, let us know here.

Capitol Carbonic is not answering their phone this morning!
AAA's phone is nothing but a busy signal.
Airgas says they have no dry ice available to the public today and don't know when or if they will be getting more. They have commercial customers taking/using their supply.

If this helps, I was at Harris Teeter at McHenry Row in Baltimore yesterday and saw dry ice in the store. Their number is (410) 528-8484. McHenry Row is that new development right off of Key Highway. You can get to it easily from I-95.
