BLOG: Mays Chapel North Deserves Better

Mays Chapel North is a lovely community for retired folks who have earned their peace and quiet.
They have worked hard and saved to buy a town house or a condo. l live in Mays Chapel North and when we bought we weren't told a 700 student elementary school would be built in our backyards.
For a number of years we have been fighting with Baltimore County officials and the Board of Education to no avail They say we don't want to upsest the old folks but what about the children who need a new school? There aren't hardly any school children here. Only grandchildren that come to visit.
In the Dulaney Valley area, politicians — who don't want the school in their backyards — have promised the Board of Education to stick it to Mays Chapel. You know the old story. It isn't what you know but who you know.
Can you imagine school busses a couple of times a day rumbling past the nursing home and assisted living building to drop off students? What about the traffic from cars carrying teachers, parents and school administrators.
The roads are narrow and weren't built for such traffic and Padonia Road will be a disaster. I understand they will have to blast to put in a foundation. Who will be responsible for some poor sole in the nursing home frightend by the blasting.
We have a beautiful park in the back of our buildings built by the county. It's perfect for the residents because it has a walking path with benches. A lovely ballfield is enjoyed by hundreds of school childen who play on the fields as teams. The trees I understand are about 100 yeras old and they will be torn down.
It is criminal!

No, what is ridiculous is that you feel entitled to claim land that isn't yours! It was always intended to be the site of a school It is your own fault for not doing due diligence about the land's zoning. Of course the developer wouldn't tell you that it was going to be a school, why would they? It makes me extremely angry to hear older folks complaining about an elementary school! You are selfish for trying to kee something that isn't even yours to begin with. Just be grateful you had the use of the park all these years.

In most societies, older and younger people coexist peacefully ... And they even enjoy each other. What has become of us when we no longer want to do that? Instead of thinking of traffic and noise, think about the opportunities for the school and assisted living to partner with each other. Older people can be reading buddies for kindergartners, the elementary school orchestra could perform at the nursing home ... We need to stop being so divisive and start seeing this as an opportunity to grow the sense of community in Mays Chapel.

Interesting that in the 3rd paragraph when arguing against the school, one of the reasons is: "There aren't hardly any school children here." Yet in the 7th paragraph when arguing to keep the park, one of the reasons is that it is, "A lovely ballfield [that] is enjoyed by hundreds of school children who play on the fields as teams." I suppose the hundreds of school children in the latter comment are ALL visiting grandchildren? I would hardly think so considering the changing demographics in the Lutherville-Timonium area. Clearly the topic is very emotional for the author and it is fine to be passionate about a cause, but when the emotion seem to confuse the facts, there is problem.

I think the main issue should be green space verses devolopment. Also, I hope those paid to plan traffic know the impact this would have on the area.

My comments on this blog:
1) While I agree retired people may have earned their "peace and quiet", they also had the responsibility to do the proper research before buying property there.
2) While there may not be many children in your immediate vicinity, there are certainly many within just a couple of miles.
3) Do you have some proof that politicians have promised the Board of Ed. that they would "stick it to Mays Chapel" ?
4) Cars, trucks, and buses rumble past nursing homes and assisted living facilities all the time, including several in Towson. I haven't heard of any ill effects from this.
5) Padonia Rd is already a disaster. This might actually be the impetus to improve the road.
6) Regarding the poor "sole" being frightened by blasting; shoes are rarely frightened.
The poor SOULS probably have heard a lot worse. Some were in wars.
Once again, that land was always meant to possibly be a school one day. It's your own fault if you didn't check it out before you bought property there.

The area the school board wishes to use is about 20 acres. 10.18 acres are legally-deeded "open space" park land. The remaining about 9.8 acres were designated for a school for the residents IF and WHEN the residents needed it. No one is arguing about the 9.8 acres; we don 't like the 10.18 acres being illegally seized!!!!!!
