Patti--Many of the cases of HFMD in Cambodia (where approximately 60 children have died) were linkedRead More to the enterovirus 71 according to the World Health Organization. Enterovirus 71 can cause a lethal strain of HFMD and is fairly common in Asia. Also, many of the children who died were thought to suffer from chronic illness such as malnutrition. Lastly, it is believed that the widespread use of steroids in Cambodia contributed to the deaths of the children with HFMD. In contrast, the most common cause of HFMD in the US is the coxsackie virus A16. Other viruses can cause HFMD in the US, but it is rarely lethal here. Hope that answers your question!
