Vintage Lutherville-Timonium: Locomotive Stops In Lutherville

Check out an interesting photo from Lutherville-Timonium history.

The locomotive pictured in this photograph ran the Northern Central Railway, with stops in both Lutherville and Timonium.

In this photo, part of the Baltimore County Public Library's photo collection, the train is pulling up to the Lutherville Station during World War I.

Completed in 1858, the line ran from Calvert Station in Baltimore to York, PA and points north. During the Civil War, the railroad is said to have been as a major union supply train. In the 20th century, it served as both a commuter train (from Parkton to Baltimore until 1958) and as a transport for freight.

The railway continued to operate for freight until 1972, when much of the track was washed away by Hurricane Agnes—now points north of Cockeysville are part of the NCR trail, while points south were rebuilt into the Light Rail system.
