Vintage Lutherville-Timonium: Lutherville Female Seminary

Check out this historic photograph, courtesy of the Baltimore County Public Library.

This is the building that put the Seminary in Seminary Avenue: the Lutherville Female Seminary.

Built in 1854, the school for women was constructed at the request of Lutherville's founder, Dr. John Morris, according to an entry in the Baltimore County Public Library catalog.

In ths photo the school is shown before 1911, when a fire tore through the building and destroyed it, according to the catalog entry. The original cupola of the school with its onion dome, seen in this photo, collapsed during the fire, which was allegedly caused by one of the students smoking.
