Vintage Lutherville-Timonium: Mays Chapel

Check out this historic photograph, courtesy of the Baltimore County Public Library.

This historic photograph, taken in the late 19th or early 20th century, shows the church that the Mays Chapel community is named after.

The church, called Mays Chapel (11901 Mays Chapel Road), was part of Hunt's Circuit in the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, according to an entry in the Baltimore County Public Library catalog.

When the Methodist church was first organized in Baltimore in 1784, there were no meeting places for worshippers, the catalog entry states. Later, preaching houses like Mays Chapel were built and itinerant preachers would travel from chapel to chapel, the catalog entry states.
