Young Marines Plant Flags Ahead of Memorial Day Service

The group from Elkridge and their leaders prepared the Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens for today's service.

The Elkridge Young Marines have transformed a corner of Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Timonium from a grassy cemetery to a field of red, white and blue.

They planted 3,500 flags on the grave markers of veterans Saturday in preparation for a Memorial Day service in which Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown will make remarks.

“On Memorial Day, we come together to pay tribute and respect to those men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defending our nation and our freedom,” said Brown in a statement. “This year, we are deeply saddened by the loss of nine brave Marylanders who answered the call to serve in our Armed Forces and gave their lives in service to our country.

"Nothing can fully relieve the pain and anguish that their loved ones are experiencing, but as a state—as a community—we will do everything in our power to support the families of those who have fallen. In doing so, we truly honor their memories and their enduring sacrifice.”

The ceremony will be held in The Circle of the Immortals Field of Honor—the resting place of 25 Marylanders killed in Vietnam and two killed in Iraq.
