She has a few million more Facebook friends than you and she is about to release a new record. Voted "Best Actress" at the 2010 Teen Choice Awards for her starring role in Wizards of Waverly Place, she’s performing here for one night only.

FAIRIES AND ELVES

When/Where: Saturday, Aug. 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Oregon Ridge Nature Center, 13555 Beaver Dam Road, Cockeysville, MD 21030.

Why Go: Wait, what was the cool light over there? And those small footprints seem to trail off just beyond that bridge? Become a believer and explore the nature center grounds for these mysterious creatures. Enjoy crafting houses for them and make a craft to take home. 

Price:  $3 ($2 Members)

 

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL QUIDAM

When/Where: Aug. 24 to 28, show times vary (see website for further details) at the 1st Mariner Arena, 201 West Baltimore Street, Baltimore, MD 21201.

Why Go: Quidam (pronounced "key dam") is an imaginative journey that transforms an alienated world into a place of hope and connection. Quidam follows the story of a young girl, Zoe, who is lost amid a world where she finds no meaning and is swept up in the universe of Quidam. The Cirque brand of spectacular superhuman feats is woven into the show and you too can discover the world and the story of Quidam with wonder and amazement. 

Price: $42 to $107

 

 RADIO DISNEY PRESENTS “SHAKE IT UP” DANCE PARTY

When/Where: Saturday, Aug. 27  from noon to 2 p.m. at Arundel Mills Mall (Food Court), 7000 Arundel Mills Circle, Hanover, MD 21076.

Why Go: Because as the High School Musical song goes, “We’re all in this together.” Radio Disney hosts a family-friendly “Shake It Up” dance party with entertainment, games, activities, and the chance to win a Nintendo Wii every 15 minutes. (Maryland residents ages 12 and up can also enter for the chance to win a trip for four to attend the Ultimate Dance Competition.)

Price:  Free

 

MARYLAND STATE FAIR

When/Where: Aug. 26 to Sept. 5, daily at the Maryland State Fairgrounds, 2200 York Road, Timonium, MD 21093.

Why Go: It just would not be fair if I neglected to mention the state fair was cranking it up starting this weekend. Ride the Ferris wheels, roller coasters, bumper cars, and dozens of others designed to shake and twirl you even better than the earthquake we had this week. There are animals to visit with, music to listen to, and plenty of snacks to match the aromas wafting from the party. It’s an exciting and thrilling way to close out the summer. 

Price: Fair admission: $3 to $8. Ride tickets are $1 each (rides require 1 – 6 tickets each).
