Drs. Lawrence Appel & Jonathan Bromberg Named NKF-MD's "Kidney Champions"

LUTHERVILLE, Md. –The Lutherville-based National Kidney Foundation of Maryland (NKF-MD) has selected Lawrence J. Appel, M.D., M.P.H. and Jonathan S. Bromberg, M.D., Ph.D. as its 2014 “Kidney Champions.”


The physicians were chosen for their accomplishments in the medical and surgical world, related to kidney health and transplantation.

“We are delighted to honor these prestigious doctors who have made significant contributions in the field of kidney disease research and organ transplantation as our 2014 Santé, Kidney Champions,” said, NKF-MD Vice President Christie Vera. “Their personal sacrifices will continue to have a lasting impact on the future of kidney health and the success of organ transplantation for generations.”

Dr. Appel
Dr. Appel is the C. David Molina Professor of Medicine and Director of the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research, a joint program of the School of Medicine and the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins. He holds a primary faculty appointment in Division of General Internal Medicine with joint appointments in Epidemiology and International Health, and directs the ProHealth Clinical Research Unit in West Baltimore.

His investigative career has focused on the conduct of clinical, epidemiologic, and translational research pertaining to the prevention of kidney disease, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. He has conducted over 50 studies and published over 300 papers in medical journals. Many of his research findings have had a substantial influence on health care policy. He is also principal investigator of a major NIDDK training grant that focuses on training individuals interested in epidemiologic and clinical research related to kidney disease.

After earning an A.B. degree from Dartmouth College and an M.D. from the New York University School of Medicine, Dr. Appel trained at Baltimore City Hospital (now Johns Hopkins Bayview) and worked as a primary care internist. He later completed an Internal Medicine Fellowship at Hopkins and concurrently obtained an M.P.H. degree. In 1989, he joined the Hopkins faculty as a clinical investigator conducting patient-centered research.  

A member of the 2005 and 2010 U.S. Dietary Guidelines Scientific Advisory Committees, Dr. Appel also has served on several committees for the American Heart Association, Institute of Medicine and the NIH. He resides in Ellicott City with his wife, Jean Marie Ricketts, and their children, Christopher, Laura and Katherine.

Dr. Bromberg
Dr. Bromberg is Professor of Surgery and Microbiology and Immunology and Chief of the Division of Transplantation at the University of Maryland School of Medicine

Best known for his innovative research involving immunosuppressive therapies, Dr. Bromberg has devoted his career to investigating the role of immunology in transplantation, with a current focus on the effects of chemokines and cell migration on the immune response. Over the course of 20 years, his work has been continuously supported by the NIH. Since 1999, he has received more than $12 million in federal funding and more than $2.5 million support in non-federal funding.

After earning both an M.D. and Ph.D. from Harvard, Dr. Bromberg completed a surgical residency at the University of Washington. His training continued with a transplantation fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to his arrival at Maryland, he held academic titles at the University of Michigan, where he was Professor of General Surgery in the Division of Transplantation and Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, and at the University of Pennsylvania, the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the Medical University of South Carolina.

Dr. Bromberg has authored more than 300 publications, of which includes 209 peer-reviewed publications. Additionally, he has been an invited speaker for numerous presentations and has received several national honors, including the Joel J. Roslyn Commemorative Lecture for the Society of University Surgeons, the Andrew Lazarovits Lecture for the Canadian Society of Transplantation and the 2013 American Society of Transplantation Basic Science Established Investigator Award. Recently, he was named the clinical sciences editor for Transplantation, the largest and oldest international transplantation journal. He resides in Lutherville with his wife, Barbara Scott, and their children, Alexander, Elliot and Tobin.

Drs. Appel and Bromberg will be honored with “Kidney Champion” awards at NKF-MD’s 2014 Santé: A Culinary Odyssey celebration, Thursday, Nov. 20, from 6 to 10 p.m., at M&T Bank Stadium-North Club Level Lounge
