“My youngest brother received a kidney transplant in 1989 at age 24. Another brother was the donor. Our family developed in-depth knowledge of both the miracle of transplantation and the difficulties of maintaining a transplanted kidney. While my brother went on to live a full adult life, it was a life filled with compromises. The drug regimens were expensive and onerous, and they produced debilitating side effects (which he bore bravely). My family and I would like to see transplantation become less fraught, through improved donor programs and drug treatments. I continued the family kidney saga when I had a rare kidney tumor, an oncocytoma, removed in a partial nephrectomy in 2010 at Good Samaritan Hospital. This personal experience gave me insight into the excellent care available for kidney issues in Baltimore.”

Additionally, Gilden is very active in the disabilities arena because her 24-year-old son is severely afflicted with autism. She served as vice chair of the board for the League for People with Disabilities and currently provides consulting support to the membership efforts of the ARC of Washington County, which provides services to her son.
