Keeping Perspective on Life ...

The tasks and routine of our daily lives can cause us to lose perspective on what is truly important. In this post I share a quote to help us re-focus.

"Perspective".  We all view our lives, others around us, and our world, from our own unique perspective.  (click here to read an earlier post of mine on this topic)  No two people see the world in exactly the same way since each of us filter our observations through our own unique histories.  I firmly believe that we are shaped and formed by our past experiences and the consequences of our past decisions (more on this for a later post.  I don't want to get off topic here).  How quickly, though, we can lose sight of our journey, our goals, ourselves, etc.  The other day I was reading a book which contained this story from Fr. Anthony de Mello, SJ:

A rich industrialist from the North was horrified to find a Southern fisherman lying leisurely beside his boat. “Why aren’t you fishing?” asked the industrialist.

“Because I have caught enough fish for the day,” said the fisherman.

“Why don’t you catch some more?”

“What would I do with them?”

“You could earn more money,” was the reply. “With that, you could fix a motor to your boat, go into deeper waters and catch more fish. Then you would make enough money to buy nylon nets. These would bring you more fish and more money. Soon you would have enough money to own two boats . . . maybe even a fleet of boats. Then you would be a rich man like me.”

“What would I do then?”

“Then you could really enjoy life.”

“What do you think I am doing right now?’"

I hope this helps to put a smile on your face and places your day into perspective.
