GRAB & GO KIDS PLANNER: Film Festivals, Big Cats, Tubing and More

Here's a roundup of family-friendly activities for you and your kids to try this weekend.

When/Where: Sunday nights in the summer with live music at 7 p.m. and movie screening at 9 p.m. at the corner of High and Stiles streets, Baltimore, MD.

Why Go: “I can't remember the last time you invited me to your house for a cup of coffee," says Don Vito Corleone in the opening scene of The Godfather. This is Little Italy free movie Sundays, so go, bring a lawn chair and pay your respects. On the Waterfront plays this weekend, which won eight Oscars in 1954, including Best Picture. BIG CAT AWARENESS DAY

When/Where: Saturday, July 23, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Druid Hill Park, Baltimore, MD 21217

Why Go: Would you mind feeding the cat? Celebrating 100 days of summer, the Maryland Zookeepers will prowl the grounds with you to learn more about the lions, cheetahs and leopards. From conservation efforts to daily husbandry practices, learn all about the felines that live in our local zoo.

Price: Free admission for kids under 2, $13 - $16 general admission.

TRAVELING BANDS

When/Where: Fridays (this summer) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Centennial Park South, Ellicott City, MD

Why Go: For one, a sponsor is giving out free ice cream (while it lasts). Most importantly, your summer list of live music is not complete until you've set your folding chair down in each park and enjoyed the melodies. This Friday it’s a band called Electric Brigade, The U.S. Naval Academy Rock Band.

Price: Free.

GUNPOWDER FALLS TUBING

When/Where: From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (daily) at 1900 Monkton Road, Monkton, MD 21111

Why Go: “I choose to listen to the river for a while, thinking river thoughts, before joining the night and the stars.” — Edward Abbey.  It’s hot, and there is a peaceful and quiet place to set your tube in the river and float. Bring your thoughts, because it takes a couple of hours to make your way downstream. What a great way to melt the heat.

Price:  $20 adults, $10 kids. See website for further details.

TERRAPIN ADVENTURES

When/Where: From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily at 8600 Foundry Street, Savage, MD 20763

Why Go: Double-O-Seven training is in full swing. Click into ziplines, feel the G-forces on giant swings, and don’t look down from the high ropes lest you let your teammates down. Bike rides, tubing, horseback riding and rock climbing are part of the touring aspect of this park. No pressure, but we’re all counting on you.

Price: Priced per activity. Check website or call 301-725-1313 for details.
