Larry Hogan, a former state Cabinet official and Change Maryland founder, made his candidacy for governor official Tuesday, but cancelled a planned rally because of winter weather.

Hogan, who served as former Gov. Robert Ehrlich’s appointments secretary, made his intentions to run public in November. But Tuesday's now cancelled event was to serve as the official start of his campaign.

"An overwhelming majority of Marylanders, regardless of party, feel that we are way off track, heading in the wrong direction, and that new leadership is needed in Annapolis," Hogan said in a news release. "And one thing is clear: we can’t change Maryland without changing governors. So after serious reflection, I have decided to answer the call, and step up to this challenge."

Hogan joins a Republican primary field that already includes Harford County Executive David Craig, Charles Lollar, Del. Ron George and Brian Vaeth. The primary is scheduled for June 24.

Hogan has rescheduled the cancelled rally for Jan. 29.

We need a millionaire Republican from another Maryland dynasty of landed gentry. Wasn't he in the Ehrlich staff that shoved out the port director and put in a political crony then lied about it? Maybe he taught Chris Christie payback 101.
