Del. Heather Mizeur, who is running for governor, has received the endorsement of former Republican Rep. Wayne Gilchrest.
Gilchrest, who represented the Eastern Shore for 18 years, endorsed Mizeur because she would be the strongest advocate for the state’s environment, according to The Washington Post and The Baltimore Sun.
Mizeur, of Montgomery County, is in the middle of a three-way battle with Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown and Attorney General Doug Gansler for the Democratic nomination.
Harford County Executive David Craig, Del. Ron George and Charles Lollar are all vying for the Republican nomination.
Gilchrest, a moderate who often broke with his party over environmental issues, was defeated in the 2008 Republican primary by Rep. Andy Harris. In the general election Gilchrest backed Democrat Frank Kratovil who won the seat. But Kratovil was defeated two years later by Harris.
