A Little Celebration For National Scrapbooking Day

Creative Challenges for the Holiday

Didn't know there was such a holiday, didya?

This special day, May 7,  was all about scrapbookers over the U.S. and the world doing something creative. Some got together at their local scrapbook store, a friend's home or even online to get their craft on.

A good place to start for new scrapbookers is one of my favorite sites Big Picture Scrapbooking. They offers various classes taught by industry experts.  Some are free while others do have a fee, but all the classes offer valuable instruction and inspiration.

For National Scrapbooking day, BPS hosted an online, 12-hour crop.  Each hour there was a new challenge asking you to use a specific technique, product, photo, etc.  If you chose to complete the challenge, you could share your page in the gallery and be entered to win some really fabulous prizes.  Sadly, I didn't win anything, but had a great time and actually completed several pages.

One of the challenges was to create a page using a specific sketch.  I love sketches — love that I don't have to think too much about the layout. The hard part — where are the photos going to go? -  is done for me.  I'm a big fan of keeping it easy. You can stick to the original design or you can change it up.  Sketches are all about a starting point to get the creative process flowing.

For this layout, I didn't stray too far from the sktech.  I just wanted to get the page done and move on.  I kept the embellishments and journalling simple since there were other challenges I wanted to complete that day.

So here's the story behind the layout (see photo). Last summer while on vacation at Reboboth beach with our close friends, the surf was incredible one of the days.  We weren't comfortable letting the little ones in the water, but the guys were certain they could handle what the surf was dealing.  Well, they were tossed and kicked around quite a bit. We saw many wipe outs. But somehow they survived, hence the title "Man vs Wave." To this day there is still much debate on who really won.
