Aspiring McDonogh Student Dies in Monday Night Crash

A 17-year-old McDonogh student died in a crash in Lutherville Monday night after his car sped off the roadway and hit a tree.

Alec Cosgarea, of the unit block of Alterwood Lane in Owings Mills, was transported to shock trauma, where he was pronounced dead Monday night, according to Lt. Robert McCullough, a spokesman for Baltimore County Police.

Cosgarea was driving northbound on Greenspring Avenue near Highview Drive in Lutherville around 10:20 p.m. when he lost control off the car, left the roadway and his driver’s side door struck a tree on the property. He was speeding, McCullough said.

A rising senior at , Cosgarea was a standout swimmer. He trained and competed for the North Baltimore Aquatic Club since he was 12, and swam with McDonogh when the undefeated team won the school’s first Maryland Interscholastic Athletics Association Conference Championship title since 1937, according to swimmersconnection.com.

He founded a company called Duct Tape Outfitters that made wallets, flowers, belts, ties, hats, purses and even Kindle cases out of duct tape. The company, which he was running by himself since spring 2010 according to Swimmer’s Connection, was featured on CBS Baltimore and ABC2 News.
