A Baltimore City police officer was found guilty of reckless endangerment after he shot a University of Baltimore police trainee during a training exercise.
Officer William Kern was found guilty in Baltimore County Circuit Court on Thursday for the incident that occurred at Rosewood Center in Owings Mills in February.
Trainee Raymond Gray was rushed to the University of Maryland R. Adams Crowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore where he survived his wounds.
Kern testified that he reached for his Simunition weapon, and was going to fire a shot at cadets clustered behind a door as a lesson, but instead he accidentally grabbed his service weapon and fired a shot, according to WBAL-TV.
Witnesses for the prosecution testified that it’s against department policy to carry a live weapon during training.
