Fire Museum of Maryland Makes Social Media Push

The Lutherville-based museum is bolstering its Twitter and Facebook accounts, while launching Tumblr and Pinterest pages.

The Fire Museum of Maryland, a temple of Baltimore fire fighting history, is embracing today's latest social media platforms.

The museum this week launched Tumblr and Pinterest pages, while also adding content and activity to its existing Facebook and Twitter hubs. (You can follow the Fire Museum by clicking on the links below.)

"We see the ground swell coming," Rob Williams, an assistant director with the museum, said. "It seems like it's just now starting to take off."

The social media push has been a long-term project for Williams, made possible by interns and volunteers who maintain the accounts.

"The trick is, you have to keep them updated and communicate with people," Williams said.

And the 42-year-old museum certainly doesn't lack for eye-catching content.

Baltimore's rich fire company history is well preserved in thousands of historical photographs maintained by the museum. Add to that new pictures of children and tour groups, as well as about 40 YouTube videos, and you get a house of history that understands its new age audience.

"We're a small non-profit, but we're the third largest fire museum in the world," William said.

The Fire Museum of Maryland is located at 1301 York Rd  Lutherville, MD 21093. Write a review leave a comment about the museum here.

The museum will be open to the general public again starting in May. Williams said to save the first Saturday in May for the annual Steam Show, which draws anywhere from 300 to 500 people.
