UPDATED: Lutherville Man Burned in Generator Accident

Patient rushed to burn center with non-life threatening injuries.

UPDATE (4:45 p.m.)—For the homes still without power and using generators for electricity, Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company spokesman Dennis Fulton has a few words of safety for you.

"In a nutshell, don't fill it while it's working and don't fill it while it's hot," he said.

He also noted that storing your fuel source and your generator close together was a bad idea. Keep them both outdoors, no where near the house.

"The right mixture of the gas fumes in the air could be explosive," he said.

Lastly, it never hurts to have a fire extinguisher in the home.

ORIGINAL—A Lutherville resident was rushed to Johns Hopkins Bay View Burn Center early this morning after suffering injuries from refueling a hot generator, according to the Baltimore County Fire Department.

The Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company, Station 30, were the first responders to the incident at 6 a.m., in the unit block of Croftely Road in Lutherville.

The man suffered what were believed to be non-life threatening injuries, according to fire department spokeswoman Donna Welsh.

As medics tended to the patient, firefighters discovered, "the generator and the exterior of the back patio of the dwelling to be on fire and immediately requested a local fire box assignment," stated a report from the Luterville Volunteer Fire Company website

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the small blaze. They remained at the scene for an hour for investigation.
