Board of Physicians Suspends Healthy Life Doctor's License

The Maryland Board of Physicians has suspended the license of a fourth medical practitioner who worked part-time at the Healthy Life Medical Group—the Lutherville pain clinic that was shut down for allegedly over-prescribing narcotics to patients without medical need.

The board posted the announcement to its disciplinary alerts Web page last week.

Dr. Daniel R. Alexander’s license to practice medicine was summarily suspended after the board received a specific complaint from a pharmacist, according to the board’s investigation (see attached).

The pharmacist reported having received "numerous" prescriptions for large quantities of Oxycodone—issued by Alexander and other Healthy Life doctors— for out-of-state patients on Nov. 21, 2011.

Healthy Life doctors William J. Crittenden, III, and Michael Q. Durry, as well as physician assistant Marina E. Gadjuko were already suspended for their roles in Healthy Life’s allegedly fraudulent prescription practices, according to the board's disciplinary alerts.  

In one example, Alexander prescribed one individual who complained of knee and back pain with pain killers and other drugs on a monthly basis, according to the board’s patient-specific findings.

The patient provided no prior treatment records, nor did the individual report a significant past medical surgical history. The patient paid between $250 and $300 each visit, the board wrote. 

In another instance, Alexander continued prescribe another patient with pain killers, despite a urine test that showed the patient hadn’t been taken the pills.
