Department of Aging Announces Senior Art Contest

Categories in the contest include drawing, jewelry, painting, woodworking, photography and models.

Calling all creative seniors.

The Baltimore County Deparment of Aging Art/Craft contest will start taking entires at area senior centers in May.

Entries won't be judged until June but to give potential artists and crafters plenty of time to work on their masterpiece the agency announced the contest Wednesday.

Interested seniors will register at the senior center in their community to compete in that area's contest. In the Lutherville-Timonium area, both Cockeysville Senior Center, located at 10535 York Road, and Bykota Senior Center, 611 Central Avenue, are nearby.

Competition categories, according to a news release, include:

  • Drawing (graphite, pastels, calligraphy).  Finished piece must be matted only.  No picture frames or glass will be accepted.  Size limitation is 2 feet x 2 feet. 
  • Jewelry (handmade). 
  • Models (from scratch and kits).  Use materials to create a smaller replica of a building, automobile, airplane, ship, etc.  Size limitation is 2 feet x 2 feet. Models will only be placed on a table for display; they will not be hung.
  • Painting (oil, acrylic, watercolor).  Finished piece must be matted only.  No picture frames or glass will be accepted.  Size limitation is 2 feet x 2 feet. 
  • Photography (color or black/white).  Finished piece must be matted only.  No picture frames or glass will be accepted.  Size limitation is 2 feet x 2 feet.
  • Woodworking.  Size limitation is 2 feet x 2 feet. Woodwork will only be placed on a table for display; they will not be hung. 

To enter an artist or crafter must be 60 years old or older and have created their work while over age 60. Participants have to register their work at a Baltimore County senior center, may only enter work at one senior center and are limited to two total entries during the contest.

Previous winners are not permitted to re-enter the same artwork that won.  Along with any entry, older adults must include their name, phone number and title of your entry.

The center contests will take place during late June at each senior center.  Each senior center will have its own judging and one first-place winner from each category will be announced at each senior center on Wednesday, June 26.

Center winners will proceed to the final competition at the Baltimore County Senior Expo, held at the Timonium Fairgrounds in Oct. 9-10.
