Carson Scholars Named from Sparks, Timonium, Monkton
Students from Sparks Elementary, Dulaney High and Hereford Middle schools have earned the scholarship for the first time for academic achievement and humanitarian work.
Four area students have earned first-time Carson Scholarships for their academic and volunteer works.
Carson Scholarships are awarded to "high-achieving students in grades 4-11 who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and humanitarian qualities," according to a news release from Baltimore County Public Schools.
The new scholars—among 14 in BCPS—are:

- Stephanie Petroski, 5th grade, Sparks Elementary Sparks
- Hannah Wampler, 10th grade, Dulaney High School, Timonium
- Nathan Jones, 5th grade, Pretty Boy Elementary
- Jordyn Wilson, 8th grade, Hereford Middle School
These students are among 425 students from throughout the country to be named 2013 Carson Scholars.
And 714 students have renewed their Carson Scholar status as previous winners.

The scholars from the Mid-Atlantic will be honored at an awards banquet April 7 at Martin's West in Woodlawn. It's open to the public.
Sam Donaldson, newscaster, will be master of ceremonies.
Dr. Ben Carson, a pediatric neurosurgeon will be keynote speaker.
