Former Dulaney High Principal Loved Gardening, Supported School Activities

Maynard E. Keadle passed away Tuesday, and his visitation will be Friday at Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley Inc., with funeral services Saturday at Epiphany Episcopal Church, both in Timonium.

Maynard Keadle was an avid gardener, favoring flowers, hibiscus and other flowering shrubs.

But he did one thing out of the ordinary: He would rearrange shrubs, said his daughter-in-law Jan Keadle, who also has a green thumb.

"If he didn't like his shrub in one place, the next thing you know he would move it, 3 feet over," she said fondly.

Maynard E. Keadle, 84, the former principal of Dulaney High School passed away Tuesday at a nursing facility in Timonium, just days before his 85th birthday on March 20.

The Timonium and former Hunt Valley resident loved gardening, and showed just as much care for students at Dulaney where he was principal, she said.

He retired from Dulaney in 1989, said his son, Mike Keadle.

"He was so loyal to Dulaney. He loved Dulaney students," Jan Keadle said. "He would invite us to a Dulaney High School play, or activities," including ball games.

Maynard Keadle, a 1951 graduate of Towson University, began his 38-year education career with Baltimore County Public Schools that same year as a social studies teacher at Stemmers Run Junior High School, his daughter-in-law said.

He worked at the Baltimore County Board of Education for one year, and then as principal at Golden Ring Junior High School, she said. He was the first principal at Perry Hall High School, beginning in 1963.

In 1976, he graduated with a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Maryland.

He is survived by his sister, five children and three grandchildren.

Besides gardening, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and taking them to educational places such as the Maryland Science Center and the National Aquarium, she said.

Keadle's visitation and funeral will be held Friday and Saturday, according to his obituary by Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley Inc.
