SPSG Field Hockey Optimistic Despite Record

A weekly wrap-up of St. Paul's School for Girls' fall sports

The field hockey team's record stands at 0-4-1, although head coach Gabrielle Mink thinks the team has finally clicked.

The Gators will have a chance to show how far they’ve come when they take on Roland Park on Monday, Sept. 26 and on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

The Gators lost to 2-1 on Sept. 19. They were losing 1-0 at the half, but a Kendall Rogers' goal early in the second gave the team some momentum. Even though they let another ball slip through the net before time was up, Mink believes the girls "finally clicked offensively."

"[That game] was really a turning point for the season," Mink said. "Even though we lost, they still felt like they won because we outplayed them."

Improvements showed the following day as SPSG earned a 1-1 overtime draw against a sturdy side.

Goalie Carrera Lucas made "unbelievable saves [and] stopped some fast breaks" to keep the Gators in the game, Mink said.

Rachel Yaffe deflected on an assist from Kendall Surhoff to the high right side of the cage for the Gators' lone goal.

SOCCER

The continued an intense run of five games in nine days with a win and a loss.

The Gators get a break with only one game this week, against on Monday, Sept. 26.

SPSG came away with a 2-0 win over Catholic High on Sept. 19 on goals from sisters Julia (freshman) and senior Ali Braig.

made seven saves while the Gators dominated play overall. In addition to the two goals that made it past the keeper, St. Paul’s attackers hit the post multiple times.

Last week’s game against Severn however, went differently. The team was noticeably lethargic during its 1-0 loss to the Admirals. McKee recorded 12 saves while Maggie Furlong and Cassie Smith played spectacular defense to keep the game within one.

"I don’t think we tested them as we should have," coach Don Keener said. "I think we have better players, or at least we have more speed than they have in the backfield, on our defense. However, we were so disorganized, which could have been a result of five games in nine days."

CROSS COUNTRY

The team's next meet will take place at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27 at home against Roland Park Country.

TENNIS

The Gators take on Garrison Forest today at 3:45 p.m. at Garrison.

VOLLEYBALL

St. Paul's hopes to extend its win streak to four at home tomorrow as the Gators take on Chaplegate at 6:15 p.m.
