C. Milton Wright Topples Dulaney's Girls Again, 11-9

The Lions suffered their first loss since April 23.

Kaitlan Moynihan scored five goals and assisted on two others to secure last year's state runner-up C. Milton Wright in its second straight Class 4A-3A North Region title, 11-9, on Wednesday at Dulaney.

It was the second consecutive year in which the visiting Mustangs (11-3) defeated the Lions (14-3-1) of sixth-year coach Kristi Korrow in the championship game. Despite excellent efforts from seniors Kara Burke and Kylie Hanley, the latter of whom was coming off of Monday's four-goal, one assist effort in a 15-6 triumph over Baltimore County rival Perry Hall.

Burke scored six times with one assist. Hanley scored twice. Junior midfielder Kenzie Brown scored once for the Lions, who also received six, and, two saves, respectively, from sophomore goalie Caroline Meegan and junior keeper Juliann Elmer.

Some may have figured the Lions a favorite since the Mustangs were coming off of Monday's 12-11 win over Baltimore County's Catonsville (5-8), a team Dulaney had twice handled by the scores of 17-7, on April 8, and, 16-6, on May 7.

"Today we did not execute our game plan well against C.M. Wright, and they did. Their goalie came up with some great saves that kept their momentum, and we couldn't seem to get ours going," said Korrow.

"C. Milton did a nice job of gathering possession off the draw and holding it for long offensive sets," she continued. "Today just wasn't our day. We couldn't seem to find our rhythm, but we certainly didn't lack heart."

The loss was the first for the Lions since April 23, when they were defeated, 16-12, by Century (13-2) of Carroll County.

"My girls staged a nice comeback with about five minutes to go, gaining draws, causing turnovers, and scoring three unanswered goals to close the gap," said Korrow, whose Lions had won five straight games. "However, C Milton was then able to gain possession again and we didn't have enough time to complete the comeback."
