Biking into History 2012: HSBC Almshouse – Hampton Mansion

One golden afternoon last autumn, two HSBC volunteers got to talking about the joys of bike riding. Wouldn’t it be fun, they mused, to combine the pleasures of bicycling with their passion for local history?  That conversation was the inspiration for Biking into History 2012:  HSBC Almshouse – Hampton Mansion.  On Saturday, April 14 (rain date:  April 21), cyclists will gather at our almshouse headquarters for a great day of outdoor recreation and historical exploration.  We hope that you, your teenagers and your friends will join us!

The Event

Biking into History 2012 is open to all persons who are fifteen years of age and older, and who are physically fit for an easy bike ride.  It is free to high school students with a valid ID, when accompanied by an adult rider.  (Limit:  two students per adult.)  The cost for adults is $20.00, which includes a $4.00 donation to Hampton NHS.

Riders will receive an event t-shirt, a map of the route, and a bag lunch for our picnic on the lawn in front of the mansion.  The event is sponsored by The Bicycle Connection; Stone Mill Bakery; Becker Academic, LLC, and Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.  It is made possible in part by grants by the Baltimore County Executive, County Council and Commission on Arts & Sciences.  Pre-registration is required.

On the ride class table of Potomac Pedalers, a non-profit cycling organization, Biking into History 2012 ranks as a Class D ride.  It is suitable for novice to average riders.  The round trip is just over fifteen miles, with an estimated average speed of ten miles an hour.  Terrain ranges from flat to gently rolling.  The return route requires pedaling up one hill.  Surfaces are paved streets and gravel paths.

The Destination

Hampton National Historic Site is operated by the U.S. National Park Service.  During our guided tour of the furnished Georgian mansion, we will glimpse an obsolete way of life. On the grounds are farm buildings, slave quarters, an ice house, and a glass-paneled orangerie.  Whether you are a dedicated history buff or a person who seldom thinks about what it was like to reside in Baltimore County three hundred years ago, Hampton NHS offers a fascinating encounter with our local heritage.
