GREAT ESCAPE: Baltimore’s Buffalo Wing-Eating Festival

If you've got an itchin' for chicken, read on.

You’ve got some buffalo sauce on your chin.

And on your shirt, and on your lap, and in your hair, and all over the guy next to you.

You must be practicing to compete in the upcoming 2011 Buffalo Wing-Eating Contest at , located at 2306 York Rd. in Timonium.

On June 11, from 1 to 8 p.m., come watch—or join—some hungry buffalo wing lovers devour as much sauced-up poultry as they can. Participants are competing for more than just digestive tract respect—prizes up to $1,500 will be awarded for the most chomped chicken.

In addition to watching the buffalo sauce fly, Hightopps will be offering live music, food and drink specials, raffle prizes, promotions, family activities and games. It’s free to walk in the door if you just want to jam to the tunes and watch the carnage.

This “Wing War” might be bad news for chickens, but it’s good news for people in need. All proceeds will benefit the United Way of Central Maryland (UWCM).

According to UWCM’s website, the charity is “dedicated to helping individuals and families who are vulnerable and at risk meet their emergency needs, stabilize their lives and ultimately achieve a better quality of life.”

Sounds like a good reason to chew chicken, and quickly.

Think you can eat fast?

Professional competitors can register here before June 1 to compete for the $1500 grand prize. Registrations must be sent via snail mail, so check it out now if you’re a pro at chicken lickin’. Amateurs can register at the actual event, but must be among the first 30 registrants. So show up early and hungry—amateurs can win up to $500.

And those regular Joes, who hide their appetites behind their button-downs at the office, can gather up four more co-workers and register here, also before June 1, to form a Corporate Team.

You office guys get a trophy if you win. Think how that would look in your cubicle. You also get enviable office cred, assuming you can wash the buffalo sauce out of your work clothes.

This competition and benefit is sponsored by Holly Poultry, a meat processing and distribution company headquartered in Baltimore. Click on their website here for more information.
