Local Comedian Organizing Benefit for Comic Shot in Aurora

Local comedian T. Brad Hudson is using the popularity of his free weekly comedy show in Timonium to help raise money for a fellow comic who was one of the victims wounded in the theatre shooting in Aurora, CO.

Caleb Medley was described as an up-and-coming comedian, who had just won a well-known talent contest, two days before the tragedy, according to 9 News (a Colorado NBC affiliate). Medley was shot in the face and remains in critical condition. His wife meanwhile gave birth to their first son mere hours after Medley was rushed to the hospital.

To make matters worse, Medley does not have health insurance—like most comedians carving out a living at his age. 

The Huffington Post wrote that Medley's family could face hospital bills up to $2 million.

Since news broke about the Colorado comedian's dire situation, comics across the country have begun organizing fundraisers or benefit shows with proceeds going to Medley and his family, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“It’s almost like the military or firefighters almost, just on a less heroic scale," T. Brad Hudson, a Timonium comedian said of the bond between stand-up performers. "We’re brothers. We’re like a fraternity. We’re all comedians and if anyone of us got in trouble or need some help ... we always try to help out.”

Hudson has hosted the free comedy show "" for five years, most recently on Sunday nights at in Timonium.

“We’re going to pass around a bucket like in church, [only] it’ll be a beer bucket and say donate what you can," Hudson said. "And if you don’t donate anything it’s not like we’re going to get pissed. Just do what you can.”

Hudson's career as a professional comedian has taken him coast to coast and on tours with some of the biggest names in the business. Though he had never worked with Medley before the tragic shooting, Hudson said he had heard of him and saw his YouTube performances. 

“He’s a kid. He’s 23. He’s an up-and-comer and he was doing pretty well from what I understand,” Hudson said. “This is just about comics helping comics.”

The show this week starts at 9 p.m. and features headliners Daylon Morrison and Desi Alexander. The full lineup includes local favorites Chris Logan, Mike Finazzo, Clay Miles, Dustin Foley, Kimberly Ambrose, William Blithe, and Thezz Grimes.

TheComicSonic.com reports that the family is nearing their $500,000 goal—although that is still a far cry from $2 million.
