Established in 1982, the Peppermill has been a Lutherville-Timonium institution for nearly 30 years. Serving quality portions with quality hospitality, the Peppermill keeps its regulars coming back. Check the Web site for weekly specials.

The Peppermill, on York Road in Towson, can be described as "the quiet place," said Dave Jones, one of its owners. There is no happy hour, no early bird dining specials, and no splashy advertising. What has kept the Peppermill successful for the past 30 years is the philosophy that if you offer your customers a comfortable dining room, well prepared food, fair prices and cater to your customer's needs, you don't need gimmicks to keep your dining room full for lunch and dinner. Jones, one of the original partners, credits the restaurant's longevity with a loyal neighborhood clientele and caring and devoted staff. Jones got his start in the restaurant business working with his father-in-law at the Turf Inn. When the Turf was sold, Jones opened the Peppermill. The restaurant is located on York Road, just to the north of the Beltway. It has become a suburban classic with a loyal and regular clientele. One long time customer comes in for lunch five times a week, Jones said, and is upset when the restaurant is closed for Thanksgiving. What keeps the customers coming back is a traditional menu of seafood, beef and veal. The Peppermill also makes a big deal over the seasonal delicacies of shad roe, oysters and soft shells. Bluepoint Oysters are available on the half shell, fried and in a rich, creamy stew. But soft shells will be in season next. Lump crabcakes are always one of the biggest sellers. Jones has his computerized ordering system programmed with an option key for the "old way", which Jones said means tightly packed, like the way it used to be done.

I'll let you in on a little secret..........The Peppermill has the BEST crabcakes around. The 1/2 price bottle of wine night is a real treat, too. Have to admit that I haven't tried a lot on the menu because I just can't get past those delicious crabcakes!

We took an older friend to her favorite restaurant -- The Peppermill -- it was quiet and understatedly elegant.... and yes, maybe the food is plain -- but it's delicious and there is plenty of it for great prices!! I've now been twice, and I enjoyed both times.

The Peppermill is a dependable place for a good meal. Not a great gourmet meal, but a good one worth the prices (not cheap, but reasonable). It's attactive, the service is acceptable, and I've never had to wait to be seated. It also serves local specialties in season, such as shad roe and soft crabs, done in the traditional manner. True, it's sort of like eating in the dining room of a very nice retirement community, usually being full of seniors, but doesn't bother me since I'm one myself. To be fair, I have dined there when there were several parties of young people in their 20s and 30s, so Peppermill is doing a lot right.

I am not a satisfied customer. The last time I ate in the Peppermill Restaurant, I ordered a soft shell crab dinner. The crab was poorly cooked since it was dry inside and far too tough to eat. I have never had a soft shell crab that tasted so badly and was cooked so poorly. Also for the service, the waiter had an obnoxious way of rushing us through the meal. He obcviously had something better to do and wanted us out. He gave us no time to decide what we wanted, even though we sent him away a couple of times. He came to clear the table almost as soon as the last bite was taken. I have eaten there before, more than once, and I can honestly say I never had a meal that was enjoyable. I don't expect to be back. This last time, it was not my choice, but rather an invitation by a friend to treat me for my birthday.
