Boston Marathon Explosion: Worst Place, Worst Time

Mike Gimbel, a local runner who has run the marathon eight times, said today's explosions hit the most crowded portion of the course. Click here for video of the explosions.

An explosion Monday at the Boston Marathon came at the worst place at the worst time, according to a Maryland runner who has participated in the prestigious race numerous times. Mike Gimbel, who has run the Boston Marathon eight of the last 10 years, said the area of the explosion near Boylston Street is one of the most populated areas. "The majority of the fans and police are located in that area," said Gimbel. "There's 23,000 runners and everyone is there, some times 100 deep, trying to see their loved ones finishing the race. It's the place to be; it's the highlight of the race." Gimbel was scheduled to run the race again this year but withdrew after a leg injury. "I've run it so much, the last time I was there I knew where the potholes…

Orioles Opening Day: Details, Traffic & Weather

Patch previews Opening Day for the Orioles, who host the Twins Friday at Camden Yards.

The Orioles return to Oriole Park at Camden Yards for the first time since defeating the Yankees in Game 2 of the American League Division Series last fall. It's been a long winter, but to many fans, it felt like the shortest one in 15 years. A winning campaign last season means the first of 81 regular season games at Camden Yards comes with heightened anticipation. A 2-1 start against division rivals Tampa Bay doesn't hurt, either. Like with the roster, there aren't any major changes to Camden Yards itself. However, the warning track that rings the field just inside the fence has been replaced—the original synthetic surface was removed in favor of a blend of natural materials. The right field flag court features a new flag pole—that of …

Orioles Home Opener Forecast Clears Up

Rain had been predicted for Friday afternoon.

Going downtown for the Orioles home opener on Friday? You may be able to leave the umbrella at home. Rain set to move in Thursday night and continue Friday will move out of the Baltimore area by noon at the latest, a few hours before the Orioles host the Minnesota Twins at Camden Yards at 3:05 p.m., according to the latest National Weather Service forecast for Baltimore. There is 80 percent chance of rain Thursday and a 40 percent chance on Friday. That's a change from earlier forecasts. Friday's high could get up to 60, according to the forecast. If you're visiting games later in the Orioles' homestand, the rest of the forecast appears dry. The high will get to 56 on Saturday and 63 on Sunday, before getting into the 70s next week.

Weekend PatchTag Project: Hashtag PatchBrackets

Post an Instagram photo using the hashtag #PatchBrackets this weekend!

We're doing something relatively new here at Patch, borrowing an idea from social media networks. We're calling it the Weekend PatchTag Project. It's simple. Using your Instagram account, post a photo of how you're enjoying the first round of the NCAA tournament—you know, pics of your brackets (marked in red, or with all of your correct picks), a shot of the bar where you're watching the games, or you and your friends sporting your team's logo. Tag it with #PatchBrackets and it'll appear in our grid of images on every Patch site in Maryland. It's your chance to show off your community—and your bracket, your favorite team and favorite sports bar—to the rest of the state. Now get to it! Oh, and while you're at it, what's your Instagram …

Orioles To Host Seat Tag Day On Saturday

Fans can check out seats for season ticket plans at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Much like a car dealer offers a test drive before selling a vehicle, the Orioles are allowing fans a chance to preview their seats for the 2013 season. The Orioles will host Tag Day from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 23, to enable fans a chance to test out their potential seats before purchasing a season ticket plan. Seats available for 81-, 29- or 13-game plans will be marked. Fans who purchase a plan during the event will be able to take home the printed tickets, the Orioles said in a news release. The story of the Orioles' 2012 season, dubbed "The BUCKle Up Birds, An Underdog Story," will be broadcast on the video screen at the ballpark at both 9:15 and 10:30 a.m. Single-game tickets will also be available at the Orioles box office…

Poll: Orioles Schedule Conflicts with Ravens’ Plans

The NFL would like the Ravens to open their season at home on Sept. 5, but the O’s already have a game scheduled.

Traditionally the Super Bowl champions get to play at home on the opening night of the season, but a scheduling conflict with the Orioles may make that impossible for the Ravens. The NFL would like to schedule the Ravens to open at home on Sept. 5, but the Orioles already have a home game with the Chicago White Sox. Moving the Ravens game back a day is not an option because of Rosh Hashanah. Vote in our poll and tell us how you'd handle it. Have a better idea? Share it with a comment below.
