Transgender Bill Opponents Speak Out at Council Meeting

Council approves new lease with Baltimore County Revenue Authority, improvements to the animal shelter and a $4.5 million bond issuance for a windshield wiper manufacturer in Halethorpe.

Opponents of a proposed transgender anti-discrimination bill returned to Towson Monday night to speak out against the proposed legislation. Ann Miller, a Republican activist, told the council that opponents "are not the bigotted, hate-mongers we're labeled as by the special interests backing this bill. "Our concerns are valid and serious and (the bill) would negatively impact the entire county," said Miller. The testimony of about 15 people was nearly identical to that given two weeks ago when Councilman Tom Quirk, a Catonsville Democrat, first introduced the bill. The bill will be similar to a law passed last month by the Howard County Council, Quirk said. Proponents of the legislation say it was spurred by a highly- publicized attack on …

Great questions Lorna, mild, meek and unanswered to date. Reasons that I believe this type of legislation will NEVER be able to be fairly enforced in any direction.... curious to see any attempt at a solid answer here.   more ›

County Animal Control Assistant Chief Offers Pet Adoption Advice

The Baltimore County Animal Shelter saw three high profile incidences of animal abuse last week.

Are you considering pet adoption? Tom Scollins, assistant chief at Baltimore County Animal Control, has some words of wisdom for you. Last week, Patch reported on three incidences of animal abuse, including Louie, a Yorkshire Terrier who was thrown off a balcony of an Owings Mills residence. To avoid further incidents, Scollins urges potential pet owners to think carefully before adopting. "The main thing people need to remember is to pick a pet that fits their lifestyle," Scollins said. "If you're a young professional that's out a lot, you might want to get a cat or a fish, which are more low maintenance." Dogs, however, require more attention, so Scollins suggests that a member of the household be around a good amount of time to care for…

Mr Scollins has some good points but he leaves out one very important one. You should determine why the pet was placed for adoption. Many viscous breeds and breed mixes, such as pit bull and ridgeback are not good choices for adoption. These breeds are bred to be viscous attack dogs should definitley be avoided. Since you cannot find out this information from the shelters it is very risky to …   more ›

Councilman Huff Initiates Horse Rescue

Two horses were found to be severely underweight with overgrown hooves and minor medical issues.

District 3 Councilman Todd Huff, a Lutherville resident, was personally involved in the rescue of two neglected horses. Huff said he received a call from one of his constituents about the horses, a mare and a gelding, both of which are Tennesee Walking Horses, and personally went to check them out at a Hereford farm. In lieu of a citation, the owner of the horses agreed to surrender them to the Baltimore County Animal Control in Baldwin. The owner previously received two citations for neglecting the horses, a $100 charge for not giving enough food and water to the gelding and a $200 one for not providing veterinarian care for the mare, according to animal control. "I've been working adamantly to try and help out the horse industry," Huff …

Meet Anya

Wriggly, happy and loving, Anya will make a terrific best friend.

At just over 14 pounds, Anya isn't much bigger than a bunny, and she definitely behaves like she'd be scared of one. This is fitting, because as fans of the television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer know, Anya was the name of the beautiful, blonde "vengeance demon" who learns what it means to become human again, discovers kindness and love, and yet harbors a phobia of rabbits. The staff at the Baltimore County Animal Shelter were too busy laughing at the comparison to confirm whether that's how the canine Anya got her name. But we're sticking with it. Anya is a mix between a dachshund and a miniature pinscer, retaining the black-and-tan coloration of the latter. She is about 5 years old, spayed, and desperately enthusiasitc about making …
