DPW: Beware of Public Works Imposters

Timely advice given the recent deception burglaries in and around Lutherville and the regular presence of actual DPW employees along York Road.

The Baltimore City Department of Public Works is warning area residents of the potential for imposters posing a public works employees.  From director Director, Alfred H. Foxx:  "Department of Public Works employees are not authorized to enter your home without your permission. Our employees wear uniforms and have photo ID.  Always ask to see a Baltimore City employee identification card which includes a photograph. Report any and all suspicious activity to the Police by calling 911." Public Works crew members have been a regular fixture of the Timonium area, as work on a massive pipeline restoration effort persists along York Road near the fairgrounds.  Foxx's warning comes on the heals of Hurricane Sandy and the potential for an …

DPW: 'Don't Swim in the Reservoirs'

The Department of Public Works has issued a reminder that swimming in the reservoir is dangerous and against the law.

There is perhaps no greater feeling than jumping into a refreshing pool of water, taking a swim on a hot summer day. Just don't do it in one of the city's three raw-water reservoirs. The Department of Public Works sent out a reminder Tuesday that swimming in Prettyboy, Liberty or Loch Raven reservoirs is illegal and dangerous.  "Reservoirs, however, are not safe for swimming and doing so can lead to tragedy," reads a release. "Temperatures in the deep waters drop quickly and diving into them may lead to hypothermia. In addition there are very rapid drop-offs, currents, hidden rocks and branches." Three young men died from drowning in separate incidents in 2011 over a six-week span, the release states. A 24-year-old Middle River man had to …

Don't Miss Your Chance To Walk Loch Raven Dam

The Baltimore City Department of Public Works, which manages Loch Raven Reservoir, will open the dam to the public this weekend.

Walking along the dam at Loch Raven Reservoir to take in the scenery seems like an extreme sport at best, and entirely illegal at worst, but not tomorrow. On Saturday, you and your family will have a chance to walk along the dam and learn about the source of your drinking water when the Baltimore City Department of Public Works opens the dam to the public from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The Baltimore City Department of Public Works maintains and manages the public water system for Baltimore County including Loch Raven, Liberty and Prettyboy Reservoirs. "Loch Raven Day is quickly becoming a Baltimore tradition, and it harkens back to an old Baltimore tradition, weekend family trips to Loch Raven Dam where young and old could enjoy the …

Mountain Bikers, DPW Nearing Compromise Over Reservoir Trail Use

Baltimore County Council members will issue a resolution in support of expanding trail network at Loch Raven Reservoir.

Loch Raven Reservoir trail users and the Baltimore City Department of Public Works could be nearing a compromise after months of negotiations over watershed land use, according to a county councilman and a representative for the Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts (MORE). Trail users, specifically mountain bikers, have been in talks with Public Works to reclaim a network of "legacy trails" that were closed off—only to bikers—because of fears that tire treads were causing environmental damage to the watershed. The contentious situation has been going on for over a  year, as mountain bikers have pleaded with the city for a compromise. While Loch Raven Reservoir is under Baltimore City control, the land is located within Baltimore County. With …

Clearly Dave Ferraro utterly fails to understand the situation. More people using the watershed is not an inherently good thing -- it will just bring more problems (as more people always will). So, it appears that DPW has been bullied by Jim Brochin to eat crow, and the cyclists will be even more unbearable than ever. No trails will be closed, cyclists will continue to ride wherever they please, …   more ›
