The Maryland State Fire Marshal offers tips for clothes dryer safety, from cleaning the filter and not operating the dryer when no one is home, to getting it serviced at least once a year.

An accident at U.S. Route 1 and Maryland Route 161 sent Edward Norris to a regional shock trauma center Wednesday evening, police said.
UPDATE: (5:52 p.m.)—Popular radio show host Ed Norris was airlifted to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore Wednesday after laying down his motorcycle to avoid hitting a truck in rural Harford County. Norris, of Hampstead, was driving his Victory motorcycle northbound on U.S. Route 1 in Darlington around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to a release from Maryland State Police. At the same time, a GMC truck owned by Ward Trucking and driven by Dedrick Jamal McClain of Windsor Mill made a left turn from Maryland Route 161 onto southbound Route 1, but allegedly failed to yield right of way to the motorcycle. Increased patrols on Thursday, Friday and Saturday coincide with TigerFest.
Baltimore County and Maryland State Police will increase patrols looking for motorists driving under the influence along the York Road Corridor over the next three days. Police will conduct the patrols form 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. on April 18, 19 and 20 along major roads in the Towson and Timonium areas. Officers will also increase their focus on underage drivers who have been drinking alcohol, according to a statement released by the Baltimore County Police Department. The increased patrols coincide with TigerFest scheduled for April 19 on the campus of Towson University. County police said they also plan to increase patrols in neighborhoods in Towson. Woolard, who already has a long criminal record including charges ranging from several drug dealing charges to accusations of witness intimidation, now faces narcotics and traffic charges. Fifty state troopers teamed up with a child in need on a shopping venture at the Walmart in Rosedale.
Maryland State Police troopers with the Golden Ring Barrack helped 50 Baltimore County kids shop for a better Christmas Saturday morning. Troopers paired up with the children, drove them to Walmart, located at 6420 Petrie Way in Rosedale, and helped them buy some of the things they've been asking for this holiday season. Each child was given a $100.00 gift card, donated by Walmart and private sources.

State police urge motorists to stay off the roads as much as possible.
Although Maryland State Police is not handing out citations for being on the road, they are strongly discouraging residents from driving. State police spokesperson Greg Shipley warned residents that increasing amount of standing water is a significant hazard to drivers because of the high risk for vehicles to hydroplane. “People don’t realize that you don’t have to be going that fast on the road to hydroplane,” he said. Hydroplaning is caused by water being pushed up to the tires and creating a barrier of water, which decreases tire traction and inhibits drivers’ ability to safely steer their vehicles. Police release: Commercial truck parking is a "tragedy waiting to happen."
Maryland State Police are stepping up enforcement against truck parking on Interstate 83. In a release Thursday, state police said they will begin strict enforcement of parking laws along I-83 between the Baltimore Beltway and the Pennsylvania state line starting Friday. "Commercial vehicles parking on the shoulder of the highway cause extremely dangerous conditions,” Kimberly Smith, commander of the Maryland State Police Golden Ring Barrack, said in the release. Except in cases of emergency, police will issue drivers citations that carry a $60 fine and no points. Civil liberties group says it supports the technology but has privacy concerns about how long the collected information is stored.
Information collected by police through the use of automatic license plate readers could lead to violations of privacy, according to lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union. The civil liberties group Monday said in a statement that it had filed a public information request with local and state law enforcement agencies in 35 states seeking details on how long the data is stored. Maryland State Police responded to the incident early Saturday morning.
A Middle River man died early Saturday morning after driving his truck off of Interstate 83 near the Baltimore city/county line, according to Maryland State Police. Wayne Scott Calloway, reportedly in his 40s, was found lying next to his gray Dodge pickup truck at about 6 a.m. He was declared dead at the scene by Maryland State Police. It is unknown what caused Calloway's truck to suddenly veer off the road. The single-car accident remains under investigation. The interstate remained open as a police tow truck pulled Calloway's battered pickup out of an embankment. (See photos)

HazMat teams were called in to address a hydraulic fluid leak.
Maryland State Police and Baltimore County firefighters Friday continue to work to clean-up a tractor-trailer accident on the outer loop of the Baltimore Beltway near Towson. The 18-wheeler jack knifed in the right lane of Interstate 695 westbound near the Charles Street Bridge at about 11:41 a.m., according to state police. Hazardous material teams were called in to address a hydraulic fluid leak. Only the fast lane remained opened as of 12:50 p.m. The condition of the driver is not known.
