Maryland Reacts to Sandy Hook School Shooting

Counties across the state took measures to deal with the Newtown, CT school shooting.

Communities across Maryland have been reeling in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Some residents said they feared dropping their children off at school while others demanded action from legislators. Hyattsville Elementary School's new principal, Julia Burton, addressed her students Monday before Prince George's County schools observed a minute of silence to honor the victims of Friday's school shooting in Newtown, CT. "Take care of yourself. Take care of each other. And take care of the place," she told students. In Wheaton, parents reacted to the tragic news and talked about school safety in Montgomery County. Frances Frost, a contributor to the Local Voices section on Wheaton Patch, wrote in an email: "As a mom of 4…

Two Storm-Related Deaths, 308,000 Without Power

There are 308,000 Maryland residents without power and there have been two storm-related deaths.

Editor's note: A death that the state originally attributed to Hurricane Sandy has been retracted and was not hurricane-related. Hurricane Sandy claimed the lives of two Maryland residents and 308,000 were still without power as of 11:15 a.m. Tuesday. A large tree fell on the home of a Pasadena man and killed him Monday night. The first storm-related death was in an automobile accident Monday morning in Montgomery County. State officials originally connected a third death in Prince George's County with the storm, but county officials are no longer linking the death to the storm. A man changing a tire beneath an SUV was killed when the jack slipped, officials said. Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Joshua …

Follow Up: Kamenetz Will Not Appear in Court

Decision by County Executive averts potential conflict between public office and private employment.

County Executive Kevin Kamenetz will not appear in a Prince George's County courtroom Thursday — a decision that appears to have averted a potential conflict with the County Charter. "The County Executive will not be appearing in court," said Don Mohler, Kamenetz's spokesman and chief of staff. Court records show Kamenetz is the attorney of record for Randallstown-based 26 Juice Inc., the plaintiff in a contractual dispute. The case is scheduled for an 8:45 a.m. hearing in the District Court for Prince George's County in Upper Marlboro, according to a story first reported by Patch.com. Mohler did not say why Kamenetz would not be appearing in court. Court records Tuesday morning showed that the case had not been settled nor was it …
