Charles Brooks will appeal the liquor license renewal granted Monday to the owners of the former Recher Theatre.
A Towson attorney said he plans to appeal a decision Monday to renew the liquor license held by the owners of the former Recher Theatre. Charles Brooks said he could file the appeal the decision of the Board of Liquor Licenses Commissioners as early as the end of next week. On Monday, the board dismissed Brooks' challenge to the renewal because he failed to have all of the community members who signed the petition present at the hearing, according to Mike Mohler, chief administrator for the board. Liquor license allow anyone to challenge a renewal as long as at least ten business owners or members of the community in the district where the licenses is issued signs a petition. Those rules then require that all who sign the petition appear …

Baltimore-area Patch readers speak their minds.
This past week, Patch readers got riled about concert venue closures, Sonic coming to town, pet cemeteries and more. Here’s what your neighbors are saying: Towson Patch: “I have been a regular of the Recher for many years. I happen to know for a fact that it hasn't been profitable for them in a long time. They delayed this inevitable change as long as possible. But to survive they must adapt. I am sad to see this place and I doubt I will go to their nightclub, but I won't begrudge them the right to run a business that is actually profitable. It is the responsibility of the town council, and local government to provide safety, handle so-called riots, and police the area. That is not the concern of the business.” – RL on Recher Theatre …

Police chief says alleged shooter was licensed to carry a gun and "had half a load on."
A shooting outside the Charles Village Pub in Towson is not drawing the same ire from County Executive Kevin Kamenetz as a brawl outside another Towson watering hole attracted in September. "I have consistently stated that the owner of a liquor establishment, a bar, have the responsibility for their patrons after they leave the building," said Kamenetz. Francis Minsung Kang, 26, of the unit block of Brook Farm Court in Cockeysville was charged early Sunday with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault and use of a handgun in committing a felony. Kang was leaving the Charles Village Pub when he allegedly threw a bottle of Gatorade at a woman and a fight ensued. He pulled out a handgun and fired five shots into a crowd, striking …

County spokesman calls owners of the Towson venue "good corporate citizens" two months after County Executive Kevin Kamenetz blamed them for a brawl.
Two months ago, Brian and Scott Recher were solely to blame for a highly publicized brawl outside their Towson bar and concert venue, according to county officials. But a day after the brothers were vindicated by the liquor board, county officials say the pair are "good corporate citizens" and that they now want to "move forward." "The Rechers are an outstanding family and they have a really outstanding record of being good corporate citizens in Towson," said Don Mohler, a spokesman for County Executive Kevin Kamenetz. "Moving forward, there's not an ounce of positive energy in regret or looking backward," Mohler said. Two months ago, Kamenetz stood in front of the media and declared the Recher brothers responsible for a Sept. 22 brawl …

TV station reports that county police "encountered fistfights; drunken, defiant roving mobs and loitering party-goers under a cloud of marijuana smoke" during a fight outside the Recher Theatre while being under orders to "make as few arrests as possible.
Baltimore County Police officers responding to a fight outside the Recher Theatre in September were outmanned and under orders to make as few arrests as possible, according to a WBAL Television report. The station cites documents it obtained in the course of its reporting on the Sept. 23 incident. "Outmanned and under orders to use restraint and make as few arrests as possible, Baltimore County police encountered fistfights; drunken, defiant roving mobs and loitering party-goers under a cloud of marijuana smoke in the 500 block of York Road, where 1,500 people shut down the road and sidewalks -- and that was only the first wave of trouble," according to the news station's website. The owners of the Recher Theatre are scheduled to appear …

County records show two recent incidents at the Towson bar where a melee broke out Sunday morning.
Four days before a melee outside the Recher Theatre, county officials met with an owner of the bar to discuss security and crowd control measures. The meeting, which was at the request of Brian Recher, was in response to a letter sent by the county Liquor Board Commission after a minor incident in August, according to Mike Mohler, chief administrator for the board. "It was a good meeting where the owner reviewed all his security, crowd control and under-age drinking control measures," said Mohler. Jack Milani, co-chairman of the Baltimore County Licensed Beverage Association, said he typically advises liquor license holders to be proactive in their dealings with the county when issues arise. The cooperation is typically seen as positive by…

Officials say investigation could result in a liquor board hearing and sanctions against the business' liquor license.
UPDATED (7:51 p.m.)—Owners of the Recher Theater in Towson are responsible for an altercation early Sunday that resulted in the arrests of seven people, County Executive Kevin Kamenetz said Tuesday. "There is nothing wrong with downtown Towson," Kamenetz said. "There is nothing wrong with the vast majority of the businesses that operate in in downtown Towson. There's nothing wrong with our college students—particularly Towson University." "I really lay the blame on one particular operator here who delegated responsibility to some third-party promoter and I've got a real problem with that because they have a liquor license and they have responsibility to maintain not only order within their premises but those who are outside their premises …
Sold out Wednesday event, described as "a destructive roving dance party"postponed by promoter "to a later date."
UPDATED (8:27 p.m.)—Baltimore County Police Chief Jim Johnson Tuesday said he expected the events that led to a brawl outside the Recher Theater Sunday would not repeat themselves. The chief may get to test those words later when the sold out Barstool Blackout Tour comes to the venue. The tour was expected to be at the bar Wednesday. "Due to recent events and circumstances beyond our control in the Towson area this show will have to be postponed until a later date," promoters said on a statement on their website. Promoters linked to a local story about a brawl outside Recher Theater Sunday that resulted in a number of arrests. The event was still listed Tuesday night on Recher's website. Promoters wrote that the bar would offer full …

Mr Brooks wants some free publicity. Everyone keeps worrying about a night club in Towson but no one is saying anything about the BIG PROJECT right behind the Recher that will have a 16 screen movies and at least 6 new restaurants. The fact that CVP has had problems shows you that its not what the venue is. IT IS THE ALCOHOL.   more ›
