Tornado Strikes

It Was a Tornado

The National Weather Service has declared that the high winds that tore through the Parkville area and Northeast Baltimore brought with it a tornado.

Pam McCordell of Parkville was right: the National Weather Service has confirmed that it was a tornado that uprooted trees, tore off roofs and left some residents in Northeast Baltimore and Parkville without a home on Wednesday. McCordell told Patch that she actually saw the twister in the early hours of Wednesday as it ripped by her house on Ellen Avenue.  The National Weather Service confirmed in a statement released tonight that a tornado did hit the area early Wednesday morning. "After an extensive review of National Weather Service and Federal Aviation Administration weather radars, ground observations, an aerial survey and eyewitness accounty, ... the (NWS) has determined that a tornado estimated at category 1 ... struck Northeast…

Woman Says She Saw Tornado in Parkville

The wind on Ellen Avenue toppled trees and caused a gas leak and power outage, residents said.

Pam McCordell of Parkville can't quite understand what is taking the National Weather Service so long to determine if a tornado hit the Parkville area last night. The Ellen Avenue resident has no doubts about what shook the homes on her street, toppled trees and broke a gas line that forced an evacuation of her and her neighbors. "It was definitely a tornado," McCordell said. "A low roaring woke me up and before I knew it, it sounded like a freight train. I looked right out this window and saw it coming down the street." Her neighbor John Fouts also believes it was a tornado that came roaring up their street, just off Old Harford Road and several miles north of the Dutch Village apartments on the city line where most of the damage from …

UPDATE: Dutch Village Destruction

Dozens of residents were displaced from the apartments on Perring Manor Road, which suffered some of the most devastating damage from the high winds—possibly a tornado—that tore through the area.

Eric and Earlyn Jones were lying in bed watching Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night, slowly dozing off to a peaceful night's sleep. Earlyn said the ambient sounds of television help her fall asleep at night, and a performance by Bruce Springsteen on the show provided the perfect lullaby.  But the darkness that followed wasn't sleep.  "The next thing you know, pop, everything went black," said the 53-year-old Parkville resident. "My husband got up and looked outside and I yelled at him to get away from the window." Eric, 50, watched as the window shattered from gusts of powerful wind. He grabbed his wife and they raced to the bathroom to huddle in the tub. "It was raining really hard. … The next thing you know I knew I heard a …

UPDATE: High Winds Force Dozens into Shelters

National Weather Service officials say final determination won't come until Thursday.

UPDATED (6:15 p.m.)—A strong storm that damaged more than 90 homes in the Parkville area and did considerable damage in the northeast section of Baltimore City remains under investigation by National Weather Service officials. Investigators were on the scene today surveying damage in an area stretching from Morgan State University to Joppa Road in Carney in an effort to determine if a tornado touched down early Wednesday morning. In a statement released tonight, the National Weather Service said it was awaiting additional information necessary to determine the cause of the damage. County officials said late this afternoon that inspectors determined that 89 homes sustained minor damage. Three others sustained severe damage that resulted in …
