In 2011, Assistance Center of Towson Churches provided about 27,000 clients in need with donated Thanksgiving dinners—an increase of approximately 10,000 from the previous year. This year, organizers expect to see another drastic rise in the number of those they serve. "Every year we worry about having enough but somehow we've managed," said Cathy Burgess, executive director of the church network, which consists of about 50 congregations that service Towson, Parkville and Lutherville-Timonium. The Thanksgiving basket giveaway began about 18 to 20 years ago, initially as a collaboration with the county department of social services. The Assistance Center of Towson Churches is hosting its first Call to ACTCion 5K run/1.5 Mile Walk around the beautiful Goucher College campus on June 3 at 5 p.m. At Patch, part of our efforts include raising awareness of nonprofit organizations doing good work in our community—especially when they need assistance. You may not know it, but ACTC provides emergency help to poor and needy families across Towson. Check out a video about the organization and the race attached to this story. Its service area incorporates 21 zip codes in the county and in 2011 the organization assisted nearly 26,000 people with food, clothing and other goods. The Assistance Center of Towson Churches announced its first 5K race, set for June.
The Assistance Center of Towson Churches is seeking runners and sponsors for its first 5K race. The Call to ACTCion run, announced Wednesday, is scheduled for June 3 on the campus of Goucher College. Registration is available on the organization's website. The organization supports food aid and other assistance for needy residents in parts of Towson, North Baltimore, Pikesville, Parkville, Cockeysville and northern Baltimore County. Suzanne Boellner, the vice president of resources for the group, said the organization needs money for services including rent and utility assistance, transportation and supplemental food supplies. The Assistance Center of Towson Churches is in need of key grocery items.
It's a good day at the Assistance Center of Towson Churches. The shelves inside the tiny building tucked next to Calvary Baptist Church are filled with pies and breads and salsa. Stores like The Fresh Market and Whole Foods Market regularly (and generously) donate leftovers and surplus products to the center. But bread goes stale, salsa spoils and in a matter of days, those shelves will be right back where they started. This is where the assistance center finds itself, just a month after Christmas. Donations of key grocery items have slowed and administrators have had to buy food to fill crucial needs.
