Councilman's Son Charged with Traffic Offenses in Accident

John Huff was allegedly driving on a suspended license at the time of the incident, according to police.

Baltimore County 's son, John Huff, has been charged with two traffic offenses stemming from an accident last week in which the car he was driving struck a pedestrian in Timonium, county police spokeswoman Detective Cathy Batton said.

Huff, 20, of the unit block of Felton Road in Lutherville, has been charged with failure to yield and driving on a suspended license, online court documents show

Batton confirmed that Huff was driving on a suspended license at the time of the accident. Baltimore County police are working on determining the reason why Huff's license was suspended, Batton said.

At about 6:31 p.m. on Dec. 23, Huff was driving southbound on York Road when he slowed to brake for two pedestrians using a crosswalk at High View Street. The two pedestrians were headed away from , while a third pedestrian was walking in the opposite direction, toward the restaurant.

, striking him with the front left side of a white Dodge Caravan, according to the police report.

The pedestrian was transported to for treatment of minor injuries, according to Batton.

Driving on a suspended license is an arrestable offense, although arrest is not mandatory, Batton said. Huff, who was not arrested, will have to appear in court to face the charges.

This is really uncalled for. I think out respect of my family u need to remove this article.
DA December 29, 2011 at 11:07 PM
Doesn't matter why his license was suspended. It was all a misunderstanding! Get your facts straight before u post these stories! Out of respect for our family this article needs to be removed immediately!
DA December 29, 2011 at 11:10 PM
The facts of the accidents aren't even correct.... Pedestrian refused treatment at the scene! Get your facts straight!

Hi DA and trish, thank you for your comments. Patch originally reported that the pedestrian refused treatment at the scene: http://timonium.patch.com/articles/councilman-s-son-involved-in-pedestrian-car-accident Baltimore County police, however, have since stated otherwise, as written above. If you have any other concerns please feel free to reach out to me directly at NickD@Patch.com. -ND

Was he or was he not driving on a suspended license? That is more important than if the pedestrian refused treatment. It certainly does matter why his license was suspended. Thank you Patch for reporting the details.
Bart December 30, 2011 at 12:58 AM
What an unnecessary article. If the kid driving had been the son of anybody else, it wouldn't have been in the paper. Although the kid was driving on a suspended license, he slowed and stopped for the people in the crosswalk. It might have been pedestrian error. This poor family has to live their lives in a fishbowl. Give them a break.
Missy Jean December 30, 2011 at 02:50 AM
Can I ask what does it matter if he's a councilmans son? Things like this happen everyday to different people. Sounds like a wanna be slam to Todd Huff!
DA December 30, 2011 at 02:55 AM
Thank u Bart! I agree! Thats what I said as soon as I saw it. As matter of fact John is my brother. I have spoken with him and I know what happened. A lot was left out. And Linda his suspended license or matter of issue with that has NOTHING to do with this accident. That is none of your business. Nick I saw the article but really bring up a suspended license when that has nothing to do with it! Completely unnecessary. It was all a misunderstanding! If he wasn't a councelmans son this would of been completely dropped.
Samantha S. December 30, 2011 at 03:37 PM
They mentioned a suspended license because if he was not breaking the law, the accident never would have happened. I guess all the above are Todd Huff supporters. And FYI, reports like this get reported all the time and the people involved aren't always someone who is "publically known". The kid shouldn't have been driving, he hit someone, and now he has to deal with the results. Cut and dry. It just so happens to be a councilman's son. I've seen multiple reports like this on the "Patch", so do alittle research.

I beg to differ with the previous comments. Yes, I agree that the overwhelming reason that this news article became a featured story on Patch is the fact that it concerned a relative of an elected official. However, this is also exactly why the story needs to be documented. I feel that once a person chooses to bid for elected office, their lives and the lives of their immediate relatives should be open to a higher level of scrutiny. Had Patch chosen to not pursue this story, I would have questioned Patch’s responsibility to the community. Atta boy Nick for presenting the article. Regarding the “respect [for the] family” points raised by trish, DA and others, I’m not sure how Patch’s reporting of (I assume) facts disrespects the family. Embarrasses the family -- without doubt. But disrespects – I don’t see that. Never let the facts get in the way of a good out-to-get-them conspiracy. Note that DA says he/she had spoken to John and now knows the details of what happened. I would trust the details of the police report(s) before trusting those of an interested party. If John’s side of the story is much different than those already put presented, maybe you could provide more detail. As for the accuracy of the points raised in article, I hope (and would expect) Nick would follow up if necessary.

I agree with much of what you have written. This local accident required the attendance of 6 police cruisers and the closing of numerous lanes. I understand that the family members may be upset about the publicity, but there are good things to come out of this follow-up as well that might temper their displeasure. First, there is no mention of any alcohol being involved so that puts that speculation to rest. Second, and I respect Councilman Huff, this article provides transparency which is something that he advocates. If Patch had not followed up because he is the councilman's son, people might speculate that the councilman played some sort of role, directly or indirectly, in suppressing it, and that type of speculation does not help the councilman. Third, the report that he has been charged with driving with a suspended license means only that: that he was charged. He is innocent until proven guilty.
DA December 30, 2011 at 04:55 PM
Samantha I get that he is taking care of his responsibilities like he should! U don't know what all surrounds this. For all u know he didnt even his license was suspended! Ot eveb what the facts are aurrounding all of that. Happens all the time... Could of been anyone that hit that person me or u! Cut and dry!! As far as a lil research take your own advice! Theres quite a bit left out. I know this crap gets reported all the time as I have seen it. So quick to judge yet u are going on an article NOT fact! Sorry but I don't read a lot of this crap because a lot of what it is speculation. I understand that because he is in office things will be out there and his life will be public. What is that was your family Larry? I'm say a lot of facts were left out! They make it sound worse than it was. John is my brother I know him and I know what he said was true. There is witnesses also and they had the same statement as to what happened as John did. I deal with police reports all the time for my job and trust me they aren't always correct! As far as nick he can follow accordingly but I'm sure more will be left out. All of this was completely unnecessary!
DA December 30, 2011 at 05:01 PM
Thank u Kay! Of course I'm upset and in some ways no one can blame me. If that was their families in sure they would react just like I did. I promise u got no special treatment and he was NOT drinking. It just irritates me too theres no mention of the pedestrian and how this could of been their error??
DA December 30, 2011 at 05:02 PM
Give him some credit too that he did stay and is taking care of his responsibilities!
K Blue December 30, 2011 at 05:06 PM
It was also reported in a prior article that the police report noted that he was polite and cooperative to the attending officers.
Jon P December 30, 2011 at 09:12 PM
I am glad this entitled kid was called out in this article. Law breakers be dammed! I always want to know which elected officials family members are scofflaws. Guess what, he is not special. What if he killed the person? This is another case of poor parenting and entitled brats that for once were held accountable. Next time i talk to his father I will shame his parenting in person. Public shaming is an effective tool. Waaa waaa waaa poor brother is being held accountable. Don't break the law and you won't have this problem. I question a politician who has such thin skin.
Laquita Brown December 31, 2011 at 01:20 AM
DA, What do you mean "taking care of his responsibilities?" In the last three months, John Huff was cited twice for not having car insurance. John Huff's failure to pay or contest the tickets led to his license suspension.
Jacob Hunt December 31, 2011 at 01:24 AM
I completely agree. Todd Huff is an entitled politician, and his son is an entitled brat.
Jacob Hunt December 31, 2011 at 01:25 AM
Your making your family look even worse by standing up for this criminal.
Buck Harmon December 31, 2011 at 03:33 AM
How do you get cited for not having car insurance?
Robert Armstrong December 31, 2011 at 07:55 PM
Why didn't he get insurance after he was busted for the same thing a month earlier? Maybe, he can buy a round of drinks at the Elks Club and all will be forgotten.
M. Sullivan January 03, 2012 at 02:09 PM
Here's something not mentioned in all this commentary: Maybe the drunks should learn how to cross a busy street when going from one bar to the other.
Missy Jean January 03, 2012 at 03:56 PM
M. Sullivan I completely agree with you. I live in the area and the patrons to the bars run back and forth across York Road like its nothing. I've seen so many close calls of drunks staggering across that part of the road trying to beat traffic. This one just wasn't so lucky. Maybe this will teach him for next time not to try and run out in traffic.
