Lutherville Volunteers Rescue Pair Trapped After Accident

Station 30 used special crane equipment to remove doors and roof of a car involved in an automobile accident yesterday.

Special equipment utilized by the  became a critical factor in rescuing two people who became trapped in their car yesterday. 

Station 30 responded to  at intersection of Loch Raven Boulevard and Cromwell Bridge Road in Towson Wednesday morning. 

Two cars were involved in the crash in which one vehicle broadsided the other, leaving a husband and wife trapped in an "unstable position," according to LVFC.com .  The occupants where in the vehicle that had been struck by the other. An emergency crane rescue had to be employed by firefighters in order to pull the two victims from the wreckage.

"Crews then worked together and operated four rescue tools simultaneously to remove all four doors and the roof of the car in order to extricate the patients, who were then packaged and transported to Shock Trauma with serious injuries," according to an incident summary on the station's website . A third person involved in the accident, a man, was taken to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Towson.

Station 30 is one of the few fire houses outfitted with the 2008 Pierce Velocity Heavy Duty Rescue truck, which is equipped with a 10-ton crane, 20,000-pound winch, in addition to sophisticated hydraulic rescue tools. The truck serves a coverage area of 45 square miles.
