Imagine the following hypothetical (although not uncommon) situation:
You're living paycheck to paycheck and after budgeting for bills you are left with $60 for the week. On top of that, your children are in need of school supplies with the new year just around the corner. Do you a) spend the money on groceries or b) spend it on school supplies?
According to Linda Price, managing director of the My Neighbors Foundation in North County, you would—"of course"—spend the money to feed your family.
She just wants to help out with the school supplies.
As managing director of the charity that benefits students and young people in the "Hereford Zone," Price was astonished Monday evening as scores of patrons flooded into for its annual guest bartender fundraiser.
This was the first year that the My Neighbors Foundation was the beneficiary. All told, Padonia Station donated about $3,000 to the charity from auctions and proceeds from the sales of guest bartenders.
"This will help us tremendously," Price said. "It's an avenue to gather all the people in Hereford to come support us. We take care of the kids in our own community. It's a great event. This year we sent 80 kids to camp. We take care of any school related activity just so the kids are participating with their peers."
The foundation helps send students on field trips, to prom, to participate in recreational programs—basically anything that help make a student feel included among his or her peers.
"I look at it this way—you only get out of a kid what you put in them. If we put a positive attitude in these kids that people do care, when the child gets old they're going to care," Price said.
Baltimore County Councilman Todd Huff was one of the 30 or so guest bartenders to participate in the fundraiser Monday evening. Watch the video see Huff in action, and to hear his thoughts about the My Neighbors Foundation.
